Vilas15 Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 Higher gear ratios are needed to maintain retrieve speed (IPT) as reels and spool sizes have shrunk. Use a round reel with bigger spool to keep IPT and a lower gear ratio. The drawback is the size and weight of the reel. Everything has trade-offs. I don't have a need for fast reels since I don't fish techniques that would require it. On 5/3/2020 at 12:11 PM, Grim_Reaver said: Are we suckers for marketing/hype? You’re lucky to have gin clear lakes around haha in order to find anything like that around here, I have to drive up into the mountains of New Hampshire or down to the cape (which has some KILLER smallmouth/trout ponds if you know where to go). I love fishing on the cape, there are 3 ponds in RI that I fish that are super clear, and actually a lot of others that start out that way but end up stained by mid summer Quote

It’s only 50ish acres but it’s some of the best 50 largemouth acres on the cape. Docks, pads, overhangs, deep water, filled with perch for forage and best of all...almost nobody “serious” fishes it. I have the entire thing to myself basically every time... Quote
