Matt Frommer Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 (edited) Hey y'all - hoping you can help. I am looking for my first boat but I cannot afford local storage. I was hoping to set up a cheap electric hoist system so I can store something in my spare room. I would love a welded john 14 feet or so but my storage limitations have led me to a rigid hull inflatable. The Zodiac Cadet Alu RIB 360 to be excact. I don't do a lot a fishing but I will be doing a lot of shell fishing and shrimping. sorry I had no where else to turn! haha So I have to get this 10 foot (once defalted) hull up to my apartment and this is how I plan to do it. I have nice access right to my front door seen here - and would attach the hoist around where the blue x is and well, you can image the rest. It will take some learning but in the end I hope it wont be much more hassle than dealing with a trailer and driving to and from the boat storage lot before each use. Plus as I mentioned it is kinda my only option. Not to mention getting 15hp 4 stroke up there too Using an attachment point like that I guess and an electric single point hoist What do yall think, crazy? Thanks - Cheers! Super User MN Fisher Posted May 2, 2020 Super User Posted May 2, 2020 Does it have to be a 'boat'? Have you looked at fishing kayaks? They're light, stable...only downside is limited storage inside for rods/tackle. Quote

It does indeed - I've paddled kayaks and sups for 6 years hear and I really want to explore with the range of an outboard and carry more stuff like casting nets and crab pots and big ole cooler / maybe even gear for an overnight trip once in a while. ? But they are certainly much easier to throw in the truck! haha Ive explored as far as human power can reach though... Like Ricky Bobby says "I wanna go fast" ? Cheers! Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 2, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 2, 2020 I'd probably check with your apartment owners that they're going to be okay with you mounting the hoist and hauling the boat up there first. 1 Quote

I own the place but still because of the hoa I want to get the single point - portable hoist so the only thing permanently there would be a little eye hook (i decided on a lower profile one.) ? Tim Kelly Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Portabote! A 10 or 12ft one is a pretty stable platform to fish from and doesn't take too long to set up. Can carry it up the stairs to you apartment and only needs a 5hp, which is also easier to carry. Otherwise, yes, you're mad. LOL Quote

I weigh 160 lbs and with a 6hp Honda motor and a deep cycle battery for the trolling motor rigged on the front it would plain very nicely. Couple of things: How far are you from the water (may need the Portabote light weight two wheel trailer that clips under the boat for hand held pulling)? What state are you in? The Portabote is polypropylene with polyethylene seams. It is very durable, but it prefers reasonably warm temperature so the seams are pliable when setting up. Snap in 3 seats and the transom and setup is complete. A military bag for storing the seats and transom. Folded up, the boat looks like a surfboard hanging on the wall. I lived a block from the water in NC and set it up in my garage and pulled it one block behind my golf cart to the lake. All that said, crabpots, big old cooler, cast nets, gear for overnight, would be a overload for the Portabote. Additional thinking. Looks like you have some area above the blue car. Could you develop a pulley system above the car to handle the john boat you originally wanted? Within HOA limits? Quote

Yes hahaha reading that with your profile pic right next was too funny! thanks - i may just see if it will fit in the truck bed and cover it up and just deal with the shorter life span due to always being hot and humid... 3 hours ago, BoatSquirrel said: Kayak? 13 hours ago, Matt Frommer said: It does indeed - I've paddled kayaks and sups for 6 years hear and I really want to explore with the range of an outboard and carry more stuff like casting nets and crab pots and big ole cooler / maybe even gear for an overnight trip once in a while. ? Hi-Powered Red Neck Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Are you planning on hoisting the boat up to your level then storing it inside? That seems like a great deal of trouble to me!! This just seems like you are inviting a bunch of liability and potential law suits if you start hoisting a boat and a motor overhead. Even a light weight ones. I'm also pretty sure your HOA will freak out about it. Good luck. Quote

Unfortunately other than general exploring those are all the reasons I want a boat hahha There is not assigned parking but that would be so much easier ... so this would all be incognito F the HOA lol Quote
schplurg Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I say go for the hoist idea as long as you post a video here of it in action for the first time. Should be interesting! Also a prediction: either a neighbor or the HOA will complain. Neighbor will complain just because, HOA for the same reason but dressed up as some kind of liability concern. Anyways, video please! 1 Quote

No way any HOA I've ever dealt with would allow something like that. Big part of why we moved to a neighborhood without one. Quote
Matt Frommer Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 Seems after all this I might be able to store IN my truck bed when I know I will be going out a bunch and only have to hoist it for longer term storage. Boat is 39 in wide and truck bed is 41.5... 15 minutes ago, Bluebasser86 said: Agree with this 100%. No way any HOA I've ever dealt with would allow something like that. O yeah i never planned on asking but will just try to be discrete -ninja style... how loud is a small electric hoist? lol 59 minutes ago, schplurg said: Anyways, video please! Will do! 1 Quote
schplurg Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 I'm just having a hard time imagining what the boat would look like hoisting it. I mean I saw a photo of one deflated but wonder if it gets any more compact than what I saw. Idea: if you do the hoist thing, cover the hoist bracket with a fake porch light (or something else) when not in use so nobody sees it. Or hang a plant from it. Quote

I'd give this^^^a try but don't get your hopes up. Friend of mine in a HOA with a 21 ft. Ranger had to use a unsecured storage lot, so had to load all his fishing tackle and then unload it all when he returned from fishing. He always left before 5 AM and mostly returned around dark. He parked the boat in his drive the night before and loaded his tackle and parked it in his drive the night he returned and unloaded his tackle the next day. He was reported by a resident who drove by and saw the boat. He finally was voted a waiver by the HOA board of directors for this "particular" activity, but was reported again when he made the grave mistake of fishing 2 or 3 days in a row. Yup, reported again. And it wasn't even his next door neighbors who reported him. They had no problem with the boat in the drive, as they had done each other favors and they were good friends. My friend is still there. I moved. It's a shame his garage wasn't large enough for the boat. Quote
haggard Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Deflating, inflating, hoisting, that's going to become a major PITA real fast, and it will attract a lot of attention. I know you said you didn't want a kayak but if this is your only storage option, I'd let your living situation dictate the vessel choice. Another option: does your vehicle have a roof rack? Maybe store it full time on the vehicle. Have you considered at 10 ft jon? Looks like they just discontinued this Tracker Topper 1036 for year 2020 but if you can find a 2019 it might be narrower than the RIB (and I bet it costs less too), maybe easier to get it on a roof rack or into a truck bed. https://www.trackerboats.com/boat/?boat=4587 Quote
schplurg Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Other ideas: You say you can't afford storage anywhere, but for maybe $100 you can get a storage locker that will fit that. Maybe you know someone who needs to store some stuff and can share the cost? Make a new friend that has a back yard you can borrow. I love fishing. I would cut something out of my life that would allow me the $100/month for storage. Then I could store all my gear there as well and other junk too. And you get a bigger boat maybe too! Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 3, 2020 Super User Posted May 3, 2020 Your HOA wont let you fill a parking space with a boat on a trailer? Any friends or family that have a place that you could park it? Hell my neighbor uses his driveway for his boat and he parks in the street lol Quote

I plan to get a proper set up in 3 years when my truck is paid off but I just can't wait that long and expenses are pretty bare bones as it is. I think i might be able to convince my dad to move some of his boxes from his 11x7 storage space into my spare room so I can use the ground level storage space for a boat - Even still its only 11 feet so my boat options are stilll limited and it seems like a 11ft RIB out preforms all other small vessels in everything except "puncture resistance" lol 13 hours ago, haggard said: Deflating, inflating, hoisting, that's going to become a major PITA real fast, and it will attract a lot of attention. I expect the RIB to be a learning experience and not last forever and when I pay off my truck in a few years put the motor on a larger boat using what I have learned as guidance ? There is a huge community of SIB/RIB owners I found so the inflate/deflate can't be that horrible! lol Cheers and thank you! 7 hours ago, Teal said: Your HOA wont let you fill a parking space with a boat on a trailer? Like businesses can't have light up signage only wooden signage with lights pointing at the sign - all sorts of nonsense - but then again the island is quite classy for the most part - not a lotta panama city beach types around ...maybe i should just move hahah 1 Quote
