Well, as expected, the bugs are getting out in full force here in Missouri. The nats were all over me last night while bank fishing. I've used Deep Woods Off, in the past, and it's ok. What do you guys like? Is there a better product?

I go all natural in this case - Calendula Oil has been effective for not only mosquitoes but also horse/deer flies for me.

I am big believer in the Thermacell. I use it bank fishing, hunting, and on the boat. The cartridges can be expensive until you learn how to fill the butane yourself. After that, it comes out to about what one would spend on a can of deet a week.

I too use these around the house....should probably get a couple for the boat

I don't want to rub/spray chemicals on my skin, so I use Skin So Soft by Avon. It has a nice pleasant smell and it's good for your skin. Keeps the bugs off. Your wife/gf might have a bottle around.

Ya, I'm the same way, that's why the Calendula Oil - which is an extract from Marigolds...totally natural.

I like 100% deet for my skin. Also I would use permethrin spray on my clothes back when I did canoe/camp trips in maine. Over the winter I bought some fly dope that I'm looking forward to using to ward off black flies in maine.

I have been using nothing but Sawyer Picaridin insect repellent for the last few years, and I've had great luck with it.

Same here and their Picardin on my my OR Bonnie hat.

Keep in mind when using DEET, anything over 30% is pointless. There is no difference in the staying power or effectiveness over 30% deet.

Fishing from the bank is a lot different than fishing out of a boat. For mosquitoes I like sunblock.  It seems to work unless I get in a thick cloud of them. For ticks I use a lot of deet.

Repel 100 Insect Repellent contains 98.11% DEET.

Only thing that works in our marshes  ?

Where do you buy this? I’m willing to try this summer on the boat in Minnesota.

Most natural food stores or herbal shops - seems expensive ($14 for an ounce at my local shop) but a little goes a long way. You don't douse yourself with it...just a touch at pulse-points - soft-spot under the ears, inside wrists, inside elbows (if in short sleeves), ankles and behind the knees (if in shorts). Re-apply every 3-4 hours.

Another natural extract - Geraniol (Bug Band's active ingredient) is found in Citronella as well as other plants.

It's not as effective as DEET, but that stuff is awful and I'd rather have a couple bites than spray it on myself and my kids. They normally bite my ankles and I've found if I put one on my ankles it seems to help the most.

Fishing the everglades for years we used 100% deet - it works but it is a fish repellent also so keep your hands clean. This has been proven in trials several times.
