Ang1er Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Have a good opportunity to pick up on sale St.Croix Premier PC60MLF2, which i'm planning to use on my local ponds and creeks targeting perch. Does anybody own this stick? My question is about versatility of this rod: how it works with soft plastics on small jig heads, small crankbaits and topwater lures? Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted May 1, 2020 Super User Posted May 1, 2020 Are you talking about the American perch or the UK perch? For the American perch, I think this rod would be a bit overpowered. You might be able to make it work with some techniques, but you'd be better suited with a light power or an ultra-light. For uk perch it would probably be a great rod for that. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 1, 2020 Super User Posted May 1, 2020 How big are these Swiss perch? Quote

I've got the 1 piece version of that rod paired with a Stradic 1000 CI4+ and it's possibly my favorite setup for bass and anything else that will bite . I did happen to purposefully shorten the rod to 5'9" as I like its versatility and balance. Just a thing with me preferring short rods. Not that 6' isn't great. Quote

Ultra-light or light rods are widely common here, especially while targeting perch, but vast majority of them are spinning rods, not casting as a premier i mentioned above. Considering the sad fact that there is no bass in my local waters, i want to build something like a small copy of bass fisherman's tackle suited for local perch. My personal favorite technique is cranking (we are using small crankbaits like a Rapala Shad Dancer, which is 3/16 oz.), so that's why i laid my eyes on st.croix premier - as i remember , premier LM rods has a nice, forgiving tip action. But my expirience based on one single spinnig model that i owned in childhood 1 hour ago, J Francho said: How big are these Swiss perch? Not big as Swiss, unfortunately... More like modest-sized to be honest. 32 minutes ago, Darren. said: I've got the 1 piece version of that rod paired with a Stradic 1000 CI4+ and it's possibly my favorite setup for bass and anything else that will bite . And what lures do you prefer to fish with on this rod? Edited May 1, 2020 by Ang1er Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 1, 2020 Super User Posted May 1, 2020 I think you'll be fine with the ML power. Bonus is, if you end up hooking a beast, it performs fine for that too. Here'sa smallie I caught with an Avid ML. 2 Quote

With that rod I fish the Ned rig, wacky rigs with 4" worms, mojo, lighter Texas rigs, etc. Probably Ned the most followed by wacky rigging. And @J Francho is right, the ML St. Croix will have plenty of strength for a big bass. 2 Quote
