Lucky Craft Pointers gone bad!!

I have several old Lucky Craft pointers (both 100 & 128 models) that used to be favorites. However, when I fish them now they rarely return to a nose down position after the cast and sit tail down at almost 45*. Could it be that the magnet has gone bad (or weak) that holds the weighted ball bearing in place? If so how do I correct this problem. I hate to retire old favorite baits if I don't have to.

Magnets generally don’t go bad. Baits however, do get cracks and water gets inside where it can cause a bait to sink, or rust the interior weights that keep them from moving.

I dont think the pointers use any sorts of magnets - It's a weight transfer system.  

 

I would guess Scott is correct and through stress and age, water got into them and caused rust or the transfer system isn't working due to stress fractures.  Either way, if they arent working properly, it may be time to retire them.

Change out the hooks to different sizes, add a suspend dot under the chin, wrap some wire around the front hook, it's a pretty simple fix. The bait sitting nose up at 45* isn't something I'd worry about much honestly. If it was stopping with the tail straight down it would be different, but if you want to try to fix it, adding some weight to the front and/or removing some weight from the tail will do it.

I generally fish a LC Pointer just about every time I am out and I have had this happen on a few.  One was on a 128 Ghost Minnow and I could see on the bait that the back stop where the ball travels to the back of the tail had broken.  One way to test this is to shake a new one and shake an old one.  The broken one will sound different> sort of a plastic rattle.

Add a snap to the line tie and check how suspends.
