The last two weeks I have invested a good bit of money into a pair of new Abu Garcia Revo SX Baitcasters and I want them to last a very long time and get the best that I can out of them for as long as I can. With that said, How often do you clean and lube your reels? I know my new reels should be good for awhile since they are new, but Abu suggests clean and lube after every use. Do you do a full on break down with a schematic? Do you send them out for the clean and lube? I know different reels have different levels of complexity involving schematics and breakdowns.Various YouTube videos show minimal and optimal maintenance for them, but the time will come eventually when it needs a good tear down.

My attempts in the past at a full breakdown on various reels have ended in pure tragedy because there’s always that one spring or screw that gets lost so I’m considering saving myself the head ache And sending them in when the time comes. Anyway, how has your experiences been with sending reels in for clean and lube? I used Abu Garcia’s service center locator and I have a few options as far as where I can send them so I’m not at a loss there.

I've heard yearly for full maintenance - more often if you beat your reels hard, less if you're a infrequent fisher-person.

I don't know what your down-time is - here I've got about 6&1/2 to 7 months between one season ending and the next beginning (mid to end of Oct till mid May). So I set aside one month during that for a full tear-down, clean, lube, re-assemble of my reels. Gives me plenty of time considering the low number of rigs I have (5 spinner/5 BC).

Sending out might be a good option - DVT is often touted here as a great place to send reels for maintenance and Mike is frequently found answering peoples questions too.

My wife and I are at least a one day a week fishing couple pending work schedules and weather. Approximately 6-10 hours a week.

What is DVT?

Ya...I'm a once a week fisher from mid May to October for 4-5 hours a time. Once a year maintenance is about right.

I'd say once a year, for a complete clean and lube.

When I was fishing 5 to 6 times a week, and usually 4 of those were in salt water, which the rod and reels goit rinsed with fresh water. I had the reels serviced once every 2 months or so. Without the saltwater, then about every 8 months, just to be safe, as I had higher end made in Japan reels then.

The mere fact you’re thinking about this is a great start. Annual schedule for deep cleaning (open and full tear down) is right on. Keep things clean as possible Free of debris and dry before storing between trips. One drop of light oil on bearings And worm gear every 6 trips  or as needed. Couple times a season pull the spool and run a swab around the rim and the frame where it rides. If you have any concerns during the season reach out here or directly.

DVT did a great job on mine a couple years ago and TT was great this year.  For me it is well worth the time and expense in the off season.
