pauldconyers Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Last year I bought a 14 foot jon boat that the guy built up into a bass boat. He got a lot of ideas from the Tiny Boat Nation group and put these "letters" with some sort of adhesive on that back down directly on the boat carpet. There are a few more with Booyah or Abu Garcia on them and I want to take them off. When I saw them I figured they could simply be heated up with a hair dryer and peel them up pretty quickly. NOPE! My wife and I both when out today with pairs of tweezers to try to work on them about about 45 minutes later we had not made a ton of headway. Finger nails are not real productive and with the tweezers you kind of pull more more of the carpet than you'd like and I don't want to damage the carpet nor take the time and money to pull it up and put new back on. Anyone have ideas on better ways to get this off the carpet quicker and more effectively? Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 My 1st try would be lighter fluid (Ronsonol - naphtha). That would be if the sticker adhesive is petroleum based. Else - alcohol (Isopropyl) should do the trick. Karl My one concern is that these letters are dried out from sun exposure. That will mean using either naphtha or alcohol will still require a bit of time. Don't do this in the warm sun - both solvents will evaporate too quickly to be effective. Quote

Before doing that, I would try a heat gun gently as to not melt the carpet. Any chemical he puts on it could bleed thru the carpet and loosen the glue holding the carpet to the deck. 2 Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Understand - but heat guns go from OK heat to Burn/Melt before you know it! CAREFUL! If try lighter fluid or alcohol, use a flat metal putty knife. Apply fluid to top edge of knife - trying to get under the letters. This will reduce chances of too much carpet wetting. Karl Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 30, 2020 Super User Posted April 30, 2020 Hair drier in lieu of heat gun shouldn't over heat the carpet. Chemicals like naphtha or keystone base could lift the carpet if you saturate it. When you do peel off the stickers there will be glue residue that denatured alcohol could help remove. Tom Quote
VolFan Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 A piece of flat cloth (like denim) and a steam iron - essentially un-doing an iron-on decal. Use the steam setting and dont leave the iron in one place too long. If you're quick you can wipe away alot of the adhesive, although being carpet makes it tougher. Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Ohhh, if was ironed on - try the reverse ironing method first! Quote
VolFan Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 If theyve been on for a while and the glue is dried and baked, spritz it with water before you start. Itll be tough if the glue is too dry though. You'll probably end up with a combination osing heat, scraping and a solvent by the time youre done. Quote
DanielG Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I don't know how it would affect the carpet so I'd be careful but a pretty much universal solvent is acetone. It's the main ingredient in nail polish remover. It will dissolve almost any glue. Try it in an inconspicuous spot first though. Quote

HenryPF Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Any update on this? - I have no stickers on my boat or plan to, I just want to know what happened. Quote

I may take some of these suggestions up, may keep picking at it or make put it on the back burner. Time will tell but I will update when I've got one. Quote
