pauldconyers Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Last year I bought a 14 foot jon boat that was built up into a bass boat. It came with a pretty thin cover for it that I think he bought at Academy Sports. This thing is so thin it is almost a dust cover and I think makes sense because he kept it in his garage but due to a lack of room I have to keep it outside and Missouri weather is not always kind! The main problem was it was so thin and the elements wore it down and also I regularly scooped snow off of it with a bucket and I think when I was doing that I was wearing down the material. Some holes were small but others are starting to flap with the wind. But now I need to get something that will last longer, is it just a matter of getting something thicker and higher quality material? The Bass Pro sales flyer arrived today and an item caught my eye. Their "trailer tite" series of boat covers are 30% off. It's hard to tell from a picture but it look like a quality item, anyone have experience with these? My jon is 14 foot and the beam is about 55 inches. Looking at their website the model that would probably be best is the 14'-16' model that had a beam width of 75 inches. Is that simply too big for a great fit? Do you have another model you would recommend I check out? 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 30, 2020 Super User Posted April 30, 2020 It is very hard to find a decent Jon boat cover. I live in southwest Louisiana, the heat & humidity kills them easily. I had the one from Academy, it lasted maybe 2 seasons. As for length & width you will not find one that fits properly because they are made to fit multiple size boats. I look for the thickest material & go with that. I took PVC that fits over my pedals, with a piece that goes between the two with a brace in the middle to take up slack. Quote
detroit1 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 When I bought my boat ('96 deep v ) I bought the cover made for the boat. ($450) and it held up for 15 or so years. Now I just buy cheap plastic tarps. I use only 1 during the fishing season, but winter with 2. My wife bought a nice looking cover off ebay a few years back - looked and fit good, but only lasted 1 season. Looked at Lowe, g3, etc. for a good one that would fit my boat, but $500+ aint gonna happen. So it's cheap plastic tarps for me ($28) and buy a new one every other year... Quote
Goldstar225 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I also just used an appropriate sized plastic tarp for my Jon boat. Just make sure to have something to elevate the tarp so it doesn't sag into the boat otherwise it will hold water like a bathtub. Quote

It is a cabelas one, nothing special. Sounds stupid (but it works) but I just leave my boat seats reclned with the back up in the front and back of the boat (not on the 11" pedestal mounts, but on the bases only) and put a chair from my deck (gravity recliner) in the middle for my elevation since I put them away under the deck for the winter anyhoo. Pretty sure an unused upside down garbage can will work also. Quote
