Hey guys I am new. I had a problem on my baitcatser. It is a kastking Royale legend. This is my first baitcaster. I remember taking it apart because I wanted to reoil it and grease it up. After I finished I was out on the water and started reeling really fast and stopped but then all of a sudden my spool kept going while making a disturbing clicking noise. I took it apart multiple times and looked at some videos on assembling it but it still happens. This might be a first. Thank you guys for all the info.

By the way when I loosen the spool tension knob and the magnetic brakes it doesn't make the noise. Only when I tighten up the tension knob and magnetic brakes

Well thats not good for sure. I'm not familiar with Cast King. How's their warranty. I'd send it back for factory service.

This is why I don't take a new reel apart.  Or an old reel except for just "looking in" and oiling what's obvious.  I've never had a reel out of the box that didn't perform well, and they are just too complicated for an amateur to go very deep.  Seems like many on the forum think that the manufacturers send a lot of defective stuff that needs to be fixed before fishing them, and I don't agree.  I had a buddy who did this up in Canada, never got it back together right.  Took it back under warranty, which was a scam.  Buy it, fish it, lube the easy stuff now and then.  When it needs more, send it to a pro.

I agree. There are probably more problems caused by people taking reels apart and putting them together wrong than there are actual bad reels. If you took apart your engine on a new car and screwed it up you would be paying. It should be the same with a reel.

Check with DVT before having any work done. Bait casting reels should never be oiled and greased up, a drop or 2 of reel oil and a tiny dab of gear grease is all that's needed.

Nothing wrong with the reel.  It's a fail safe design.  If you look at the pinion, there are two "ramps" where the spool pin seats.  The action you took is not a normal fishing action, and the spool pin slide up that ramp, and spin in the wrong direction, making a pretty horrible sounding clicking noise.  Do it once, no big deal.  Do it a lot, and you wear out those slots for the spool pin, and your reel will fail early due to misuse.

Do you know how to fix IT? Or should I replace it...or just use it while it lasts.

You can replace the pinion, but if you repeat the activity, it will happen again.  There's nothing to fix - it's a fail-safe to avoid stripping the pinion or damaging the spool pin.  you *can* try stretching the yoke springs, if it's happening a lot.  This will put more pressure on the pinion when the spool is engaged.

Thank u. I learned my lesson. Hopefully I don't do that on my new reel.

Maybe im not getting it, but what was the issue? Based on what he said

" I was out on the water and started reeling really fast and stopped "

I would reel fast and then stop it but the spool would keep spinning making a clicking noise. Hope it makes sense

Yeah that was what I gathered from it.

But thats definitely not something normal.

If you are spinning the handle and letting it turn without your hand on it and then abruptily stopping it, it may make the clicking noise but the spool should stop.

If you are spinning the handle with your hand on it at all times and its doing this when you stop turning it thats not good.

I’m not an expert but cleaned quite a number of reel. I’m not sure how last king do pin seat under pinion gear nor do they have tight tolerance like shimano/Daiwa.
There are things that can cause pin shaft to escape from the lock, if spool tension way too loose or too tight. Or two springs is not strong enough to keep the pinion yoke stay in place. Another option is you installed the pinion yoke up side down. Just my .02.

Is this normal? I don’t know I tried with all my reels shimano Daiwa and Abu ALX and none of them do the way you describe.

Added.....

Went back to read your post again and I’m confused. Did you press thumb bar in order to get the spool free spin?

No.

Just like @J Franchomentioned, open the reel one more time. Check if you installed pinion yoke correctly. Now look at Two springs, a good spring should show some resistance when you try to install handle side plate. After you have done all this and still have the same problem, either sent out for warranty or get help from professional.

Thank you. I will try it again

I had that same Trulinoya platform as a BPS Bionic reel and it was really prone to letting the spool jump around in the pinion.  Years later Kastking is using the same platform and the same issue exists.  It's a $30 reel.  Don't sweat it.  Use it until it stops working and buy a little higher end reel.

Thank you. I bought a reel off of amazon. Hopefully it does it better.
