Riverside.bassin Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) I'm planning on getting a 6'8" medium power extra-fast action rod (St. Croix Mojo Bass) to be paired with a Shimano Curado 70. I will be using it for small/finesse type jigs and little Texas-rigs (smallmouth sized). Is this rod okay for that? Most people use a MH rod for jig type situations, but I already have several MH's and would like to get something for the small jigs and T-rigs I throw. Thanks! Riverside.bassin Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 Also... would a med/fast work better for the techniques I listed above? Or is the extra-fast good? Quote
waymont Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 You are right on the money with your applications for that rod. I have a Loomis 6'8" med XF 802c. I love it for 1/4oz Bitsy Flip jigs, and T rigs with a 3.5" beaver and a 1/8- 1/4oz bullet weight. It's such a fun light weight rig, but still has the power to set the hook. I also use mine for 3.5" swim baits with belly weighted hooks (some with an under spin), and poppers too. It's a pretty versatile setup for lighter weights. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 27, 2020 Super User Posted April 27, 2020 Probably good for Ned rigs and wacky rigs also. Quote
Junger Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Weightless flukes too. Very versatile rod if you're not dealing with cover. Quote
GReb Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 I have the same rod in the LTB series. It’s main use in my arsenal is jerkbaits. I also really like it for shaky heads. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 27, 2020 Super User Posted April 27, 2020 MXF mojobass 1/4-5/8 should work fine for what you listed. I prefer XF for jig to get a good hookset. (Finesse jig 1/4oz and lower) Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted April 27, 2020 Super User Posted April 27, 2020 Because I'm a shorecaster, I'd use that for a jerkbait rod. Boaters need a longer rod, but not me. jj Quote
Smelter96 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I have that rod in the LTB flavor. I use it for almost exclusively for jerkbaits Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I have that exact same rod/reel setup and it is one of my favorite combos I own. I bought it to use as a jerkbait and small top water rod, and it is absolutely perfect for those baits. I have also used it for shakey heads, tubes with 3/16-1/4 oz heads, light wire finesse jigs, smaller swimbaits, squarebills, and craws on jig heads for river smallmouth. Super versatile rod, might not be perfect for all of those techniques but it definitely handles them. I have 30lbs powerpro maxcuatro which is the diameter of regular 20lbs braid, and will usually throw a 10-14lbs mono leader or floro if I’m throwing a jerkbait. If I want to go out and just have fun catching bass, that’s the rod I pick up. I’ve even landed a 39” northern on it last fall, that fish had that rod bent down to the reel when it would make runs it was awesome. Quote
Riverside.bassin Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Thank you for all the input, I really appreciate it! Ill be ordering that rod soon! Quote
