Squarebill Rod

So I have been using a 7’0 medium power fast action rod for squarebills and I have noticed that I would get them in with 1/3 or 2/3 of a treble in their mouth or lose them at the bank. I did some research and it seems like anything with a moderate to moderate-fast tip is best. It gives delay in the hook set so the fish can eat the bait then you set the hook. Power wise it is generally between medium and medium heavy. So I was thinking of buying the G-Loomis E6X Crankbait Casting Rod in the medium heavy power moderate fast action. I think the rod would have good back bone to drive the hooks into the fish and the tip to keep the hooks from being horses out. I would like though to see what others use. I live up in northwest Indiana and there is a lot of rip rap but also lots of places with grass so I’m just trying to find an all around squarebill rod. I’m generally throwing 1.5’s and up to 3.0 squarebills. Thank you for the feedback.

That would be a great rod for that.  I use a Dobyns Fury MH / MF rod. It’s perfect for treble baits like that it’s the 705 CB I believe e

That’s nice to know. I owned  mh/mf and it felt great but it was a 7’6 which did not help with confined areas

Well in grass, a MH/MF or M/F is quite ideal for a quicker rebound, but in open water, your M/M or M/MF is quite ideal for superior casting distance and keeping them hooked.

What do u consider a good all around squarebill rod

One of the guys I fish with uses E6X and likes them.  I have tried a few of his and did not care for them.  They seemed kind of cheaply made compared to other rods at that price point.  They also felt kind of dead in hand to me.  I am not knocking Loomis rods.  I have serval and I am a big fan, just not these rods. 

 

Couple of suggestions around the same price....  St. Croix Legend Glass.  Best crankbait rod I have used.  I have the 7'2 Medium Mod.  Another cheaper option and I just received this rod.  I have used it once and right off the bat it's much better than expected....  Shimano Curado Crankbait 7'4'' MH Mod.  I plan on using this as my dedicated square bill rod.  It easy to load on a cast and can send a 3/8oz or 1/2oz square bill a long way.  It's not very sensitive but it doesn't have to be.  Last one.... St. Croix Avid.. all around great rods and probably the best bang for the buck.

I have been using a Daiwa Tatula glass M/R (MF) rod for most of my squarebills and while it's not my favorite in grass or around stumps, it's not horrible either and it has a fair amount of bend to it where it can throw the lighter ones and keep them pinned. If you throw them around grass and stumps most of the time, your M/F might be a better choice but if you are one to get sick of pulling the grass out of the hooks and don't have too many stumps, a M/M is the way to go.

I use a falcon bucoo trapcaster...it's 7ft medhvy mod fast and I love it
