so i am fishing all electric tourneys this year and need to either get a transom mount motor or a new bowmount  my question is if i get a 70lb thrust tm for the bow will i be able to use it to move small distances without making alot of noise and going to fast.  my boat is kinda heavy. i have a s*** ton  of tackle in it, only 1 battery but i will have 3 mostlikelyif i get a transom moutnt and 2 if i just get a larger bow mount and i have about 2 sheets of plywood on is treated so its a bit heavier  and my boat is a 14 ft mod v. i also thought of jsut getting a wind sock or whatever there called and just keep it on when i am moving short distances

Depends on make and model, but you should be fine. Ideally you'd want one of the infinitely variable models for your speed control. Lets you always pick the right speed for the conditions and setup. Most models now days are set pretty good when it comes to speed selection. I know on the MK that I have, the 4 lowest speeds are just increments that don't exceed half of the available thrust, so they work fine for fishing. Only on speed 5 does it increase to full throttle.

i think i am going to get a 70lb minn kota edge or a used 80lb maxxum so i will have two batteries and maybe a smaller one for elctronics b.c. i am worried about eating up battery. i will be using the motor on its highest speed probably to get where i need to go then it on its lowest speed while fishing. would i benefit from a on board charger?  if so what should i get i have seen many that say 2 or 3 bank and different amounts of amps

I would strongly suggest you talk to a few people that have electric jons set up for electric only tournaments.

You're talking about running TM's that big, on high with only two batteries, I'm affraid you might be in for a rude awaking the first time you hit the water on a lake that has any size to it. I don't think they even make 70# and bigger TM's in 12 volt models so you will need at least two batteries for each TM and if you are thinking you're going to run two big TM's like those off the the same two batteries, be sure to take a partner and two paddles so you don't have to paddle back by yourself.

Transome mounted motors are a royal pain if your trying to cast and control the boat if any wind at all is blowing.  A bow mount is almost going to be a must.  Then if you don't have something on the transome, it's going to want to keep coming around you.

i am only planning on one tm if i get a 70 lb and then using 2 batteries for the tm and one more possible for the electronics so if i put the elctronics battery in the back would it help from swinging around on me? i also have a28lb transom mount laying around. could i use it with a bigfoot to keep it from trying to coe around on me.

You need to put all your batteries at the transom and then add a transom mount motor for extra speed or to at least have a keel to keep the boat from swinging around on you. The home-made keel shown in the website is a good alternative. Your boat's highest displacement is at the back of the boat and that is where the most weight should be.

Having an on-board charger is a convenience but it is also extra weight that is not functional while fishing.

I build electric jons for tournament fishing and have done extensive tests on the speed. My standard setup is two 80lb thrust transom motors mounted and lock in the forward position. I run two hotfoot switches to the front of the boat to turn them on. Then use the transom motors for thrust and the bow mounted 80lb motor up front to do the steering. Yep that's six batteries and on big lakes we will put two extras in just in case.

If I had your boat I would run one 80lb transom and move all four of the batteries up front under the front deck. Store your tackle where you can. Don't run your transom motors straight down in the water. Tilt them up one or two slots and lock them down. When we need to get the most speed out of our boats both me and my partner will stand in the front of the boat as well. When running an electric boat .1 mph addition is a lot. So experiment and see what works best.

what if i just got a 80lb transom and used my 28lb bow mount for the steering  because i cant really aford two 500$ motors? I understand i wont get as much speed but will it still work fine?

My and most standard rules is to go big or stay home.

I don't know the rules for electric only, and if money was no deal....................I'd get 101 MK regular hand control model and infinite, that has the regular fold out scissor deploy.

With the 5 click modules on any boat you will get in situations were you would like a little slow or a little faster.

If you are making long runs (sounds funny) it's very hard on batterys and run time if done 100% power.

Get an 80 for the back and you can try the 28. I think you will have trouble turning it when the back motor is on high. But if you use that setup it will give you time to save for something bigger for the front.

Garnet, I've put three 101s an a boat and I can still get three 80s to go just a fast. You see. There is a terminal speed that a boat can go before needing twice as much power to get it up on plane. Three 80's get the boat to that terminal speed just fine.

okay i think im going to get a 80 for the back and try to use the 28 for turning and if i cant ill just unlock the back motor and steer from there then hopefully get a used 70 or 80 for the front...

but would be any better or worse to get a 80 bow mount and use the 28 i have layin around for the back? my current bow mount is pretty old anyway and idk how long the steering cable is gunna be around its pretty beat

okay one last question what model motor should i get

i have allways been a minnkota guy but i saw this and it looks like a pretty good deal

or i could pay 560 for a 80lb mk traxxis

o and can someone explain to me how u set u these 24v deals

I've only used 101/36 on 22ft bassboats. Think I would still try it for blowing weeds off prop.

Wish there was electric only tourneys around here, sure would change the day on Erie.
