STBen1215 Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 Started off this morning fishing a spro popping frog (black) in some clearish backwater (river is muddy). I use a frog quite a bit and alway had good success. Use a 7'3 H, 65 lb braid, locked drag, let them blow up reel slack and swing when I feel them. Well today was among the most frustrated I've ever been and never experienced anything like this. Today they would blow up and eat it, set the hook and get them coming to the boat and they would jump and throw the frog. VERY rare has this happened to me. Depressed lol Any tips?? Talked to a buddy and he said somedays it just happens. Wonder if the stained water could have played a factor as they are keying on the bait as much. But then I think well I had them for a bit.... Jaderose Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 What reel?....maybe more importantly, what SPEED reel? Quote
NJBasstard Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 You buddies right that how it is sometimes. The Spro popping frog is one of my favorites in open water however the bodies aren't the softest. I like to bend the hooks out about 1-2mm from the body so the frog doesn't have to compress so much when setting the hook. It certainly helps my hookup ratio. If you haven't done that already give it a try. If you do that already than I'm not sure what to tell you. Frog fishing is fun but your bound to lose some fish. 1 Quote
STBen1215 Posted April 26, 2020 Author Posted April 26, 2020 XG Tatula. A few people told me that in dirty heavily stained water they can have a hard time pin pointing the frog and they slap at them which is why hookup % goes down. Any thoughts to that? Every fish we caught (even on spinnerbait) were barely hooked. Quote
813basstard Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Oh, you mean you went bass fishing... ‘Frog’ bass fishing at that. Don’t bring anything but a frog next time. Yeah, shake that load off and go again. All those videos on YouTube tell you how, when, color, weight but none say ‘your going to get punched in the mouth sometimes. We all do. That’s bass fishing.’ 2 Quote
STBen1215 Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 What is strange is that I have lost fish from throwing the frog mid fight but like 1 in 100. Usually when I miss them its from the original hookset. Rare to hook up and them throw it. Yet today, 5 of them... I saw every single fish 2.5-3.5 lbs. I just can't seem to understand. I understand somedays aren't your day. Is it safe to say just one of those weird bite days and a case of tough luck?? Quote

With the rain we recently got the stain in the water can make it more difficult for them to locate baits. It happens man. Quote

I caught my first frog fish of the year 3 weeks ago in NE Kansas with water temp in the mid 50's. A buddy had a 30lb bag almost all on a frog a week before that. They'll eat one in pretty cool water. OP, the way your fish are getting hooked light almost sounds like spawning fish protected nest just trying to move your baits and not fully eating it, just grabbing the back end and trying to get them away from their beds. 1 Quote

If it is Christmas time and there isnt snow and or pine trees around then it's not really an American Christmas and you are might as we be somewhere else. At that point you might as well just make up a new holiday anyways. I mean, really, what is point is celebrating Christmas at that point anyways? Just make up a new holiday. You don live where the Christmas one makes sense. Just make up a dead grass day and stick a plastic snowman in the yard. Why are you slagging on the guy for where he lives and involving Christmas in a Froggin thread in late April. It's warmer in S. Georgia. That's kinda not a new thing. Besides.....I'd be perfectly happy if I never saw snow again. Christmas or any other time. 3 Quote
