Zachary M Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I have used braid, fluoro, and mono all on my baitcasters. They definitely have their benefits and advantages in certain situations. I’ve gone back to straight braid and braid to leader on my rods, and I forgot how bad braid bites on itself while casting. I run 30lb J Braid and have not had issues until now. Every other cast, my braid bites down mid cast and ruins the cast. It’s annoying to be modest. I love fishing braid but this makes me want to go back to fluoro. What brands of braid do y’all think bite less? Or is it simply the diameter of my 30lb braid not being large enough?? Quote

LionHeart Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I honestly do not experience what you are describing unless it is during the cast following a hard hook set. You mean this happens on a regular basis for no apparent reason? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 I only use 20lb braid and never have my braid “bite down”. There must be something you do to cause it to happen. A buried backlash maybe, or pulling on a snag using the reel? Drag set too tight? 1 Quote

Take it all off and re-spool it with some tension - loose braid on the reel can cause this. 2 Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 Yeah respool that braid tight. Toight like a toiger. I've gone low as 10 lb braid on casters without issues. Well other than cutting both hand and leader knot. Quote
basser27 Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I would take it off and respool it back on tight. Sounds like it’s digging into itself Quote

This way only the 50' feet or so of line you reel back in will be loose plus the line can not dig into itself on a hookset if the braid is put on the reel tight in the first place (#30 lb. Power Pro - no problems on any reel as long as I spooled the braid on TIGHT) . Quote
Kev-mo Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I'm currently using 20 pound j-braid and occasionally experience the bite back. I also experienced it with power pro. It's all operator error; whether using my drag/reel to pull out a snag, from a hard hook set, a backlash loop I failed to clear or from a big fish pulling drag . The first three happen much more frequently lol. Quote
NJBasstard Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I use Power Pro from 20-50lb on my casting gear. I spool the line on tight but still have issues occasionally with the 20lb & 30lb. The 40 and up is never an issue though. Seaguars claim to their Smackdown braid is that it doesn't dig in like other lines do. This year I decided to spool a couple of my casting reels with there 30lb and I have to say that so far it's been good. Haven't used it long enough to want to switch over just yet. Might be coincidence but I've had zero issue with it so far. 1 Quote
CrankFate Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I would take it off throw it out, buy something else and spool it on as thought as possible. If the braid is visibly serrated, visibly flat like glide dental floss or visibly braided like a braid in someone’s hair, it is never going to cast as good as something else smoother and rounder. Backroad Angler Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 If you search braid opinions on bassresource, there'll be at least 100 threads that pop up, if you want more opinions. I would def go 30-40lb Powerpro or 30-40lb suffix 832 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 Never go below 50 lb. I use Sufix 832. Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 Lol, I've used PowerPro since it's introduction and never gone above 20#, no issues on casting or spinning. OP, maybe you need a little more break applied to keep line taut, not sure. Is your line connected to spool through hole ? Any backing ? Quote
OnthePotomac Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I have 50lb 832 on my frog rod, but to avoid what the OP describes I don't throw the frog over hand with gusto, but instead sort of launch the frog with an underhand lob. The distance is good and I don't have to mess around with strange braid behavior. No braid on any other reels. Quote
waymont Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 As others have said you must reel your line on tightly. I use 15lb, 20lb, mostly 30lb and up and have never one time experienced the line biting in on casting reels. i only use Power Pro original, and in the 15 and 20 PP super slick v2. Your casting issue may not be biting in, it may be small loops making knots. I used to experience that years ago when I first put braid on my castings reels. Quote
Dens228 Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 I run both PowerPro and Sufix 832, 20 lb up to 65 pound. When I fill my reel I put pressure on the line by running it between my thumb and finger as I fill the spool. I can say I've never had line dig issues with any of my braid. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 A lot of good suggestions, but anyone who says they "NEVER" have braid dig in, doesn't fish very often, or doesn't throw it where the fish are. A nice hard hook set on a big fish with braid and you will have dig in and it will stop in the spool at the point where you set the hook on the next cast 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 All these guys who say they never had digging in issues with braid are just not telling the truth. All braids will dig in no matter what brand or diameter if you pull on them hard enough. It's the nature of the beast. Wide spools have this happen less than narrow due to crosiing the line more. The thicker the diameter the less it will happen. You see Pros using 50 65 and 80 on casting gear for a good reason . That reason is it works the best. I've used 20 30 40 50 65 and 80 over a 30 year period and have to agree with them. Smaller diameters are best on spinning rods. I'm not saying you can't use them on casting but the bigger diameters work better with less issues. 2 minutes ago, jbsoonerfan said: A lot of good suggestions, but anyone who says they "NEVER" have braid dig in, doesn't fish very often, or doesn't throw it where the fish are. Super User Bird Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 Well then.......the moral of the story is to target smaller fish. Lol 1 Quote

Both the fish were on braid. Hopefully I didn't jinx myself. LOL Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 27, 2020 Super User Posted April 27, 2020 Sorry, I don't buy the "NEVER". I would venture to say it is just about impossible to "NEVER" have a dig in. Never made a bad cast? Never hung up on something and tried to pull it free? 1 Quote
