Ksam1234 Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 So it was a wonderful day today, air temps at 60, bright and sunny. I wanted to try a new local lake, water temps were between 51-53 degrees depending where I went . I tried the upper lake with no success and also the middle lake.. the upper lake didn’t seem to have much structure. Like a big bowl, lots of weeds and some docks. I tried flipping to the docks and using jerkbaits and cranks and swimbaits. Middle lake had more structure and trees and lay downs but also no luck. The only place I had luck was the lower lake. I found some gravel rock and sand area where I caught two nice smallmouth but that was it. Couldn’t really locate any other bass. Also to mention, when I did catch a bass I would see like 3-4 more follow in with it to the boat then scatter.. water was super super clear. Talking 8-10 feet of visibility. I am fishing out of a boat and tried my electronics but couldn’t seem to put any kind of pattern together or catch any more than 2 fish in 8 hours. There is a small channel between each lake where I tried , figure that’s a good ambush point but also, nothing.. how would you fish this?? Also to add I csught the smallmouth at the other end of the lower lake. If you come out of the channel shown below and head straight across the lake in about 7 ft of water. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 Lower lake at the 10/15' point located at 1 o'clock upper right right. Similar flat point on the upper lake @ 4 o'clock. Tom PS, the saddle at 6 o'clock between the deep area and the main basin of the upper the lake could be good year around. 1 Quote

Could you circle the 6 o clock area your talking about? The saddle?? Sorry if I am a little confused. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 That lower lake has an odd formation . Like Wrb said there is a saddle between the north and south point with deep holes on both sides . 3 hours ago, Ksam1234 said: Could you circle the 6 o clock area your talking about? The saddle?? Sorry if I am a little confused. Look between the two deep holes , they should be easy to Identify . There is a saddle shaped ridge . 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 It's looks shallow and more likely becomes covered with weeds and boats will keep a oth open in the summer. What looks interesting is the funnels on both sides leading into deeper water allows bass to move between the deeper areas stopping on the bench to ambush critters. This type of bench with deep water access is a classic big bass area. Tom 1 Quote

I’m not used to fishing in a boat as this is my first year. I have a lot to learn on fishing ledges , deeper water, structure and learning about the breaks etc. so I appreciate all help. I do know this lake has some big bass and other big trophy fish. They have had 50 inch Muskie Recorded here Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 26, 2020 Super User Posted April 26, 2020 Musky will be the top predator in any lake and take over the prime locations. The bench and funnels leading to deep water is a prime location and so is the point to the right side. The under water point on the north shore is also a prime location that may be better for big bass do to the musky population, it depends on where the predominate prey source is located. Musky like large prey fish like Cisco, white fish, perch and walleyes. Bass are left with young of the year prey fish, minnows, bluegill and crappie, crawdads, frogs etc depending what the lake has to offer. Tom 1 Quote

This point is a mirror image, for lack of a better term, from what is commonly called a point. I can still see that it would be a highway for bass to travel from deep to shallow and shallow to deep; and I assume that is why it is something to look for. Is there a name for this type of reverse point? And what time of year would be best to fish it? 1 Quote

Tom This lake has everything from smsllmouth, largemouth , walleye, perch, bluegill, Muskie , northern pike and obviously minnows and small baitfish. It’s a very nice yet small enough lake you could fish it all in a day or two Quote
