Willg3428 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 I need I jig rod which should I get I’m thinking under or around 200 Quote
NJBasstard Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Theirs a lot of choices around the $200 range. What size jigs are you throwing? Any specific reel you're pairing it with? A particular length you're looking for? Quote
Willg3428 Posted April 23, 2020 Author Posted April 23, 2020 I fish a lot of 1/2 3/8 oz jugs but to be honest I’m just looking for a second Casting combo I throw a lot of jigs chatter baits spinnerbaits lipless cranks Quote
EWREX Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 daiwa tatula elite 7'3 MH fast action all purpose rod is great. retails for $179.99 2 Quote
scbassin Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Check out the Dobyns rods Fury & Sierra Series Rods these are well under $200 & you want to go a bit higher look at their refurbished rods. I would call and tell them you need some help on choosing a jig rod. These people are very helpful just tell them what you are looking for. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 23, 2020 Super User Posted April 23, 2020 On the cheaper side, I really like the Lews tournament TP1 speed stick, got another one on the way. When I finally get tired of throwing Jerkbaits in the spring I'll spend more time with 6'10 - 7'0 MH speed sticks on casting then any other rod in my arsenal. MH's are very versatile. Imo 1 Quote
NJBasstard Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 For a <1/2oz jig rod that can do it all look at the 4 power Dobyns. Either a 704 or 734. If your going to be fishing in heavy cover step up to a 5 power rod. Other rods to look at are the Daiwa Tatula Elite and the St Croix Avid. Quote
evo2s197 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Major Craft MS-1 Casting Rod 7ft3 MH Excellent rod for the money. Dobyns are a decent value only if they are still doing the 40% off of them. Also Avid X 7ft MH from the Tackle Trap they are still doing discount on them that will get you under the $200 mark. Quote
Willg3428 Posted April 23, 2020 Author Posted April 23, 2020 Would a 710 Hev work for flippin and casting jigs or just flippin Quote

Do you mostly pitch to close heavy cover targets? Tom Quote
TBAG Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Best do it all rod for everything you listed on the market right now is the Dobyns Sierra 734c. JMHO Quote
Willg3428 Posted April 23, 2020 Author Posted April 23, 2020 i usually cast and flip into lay downs and some docks Quote
Ksam1234 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 ALX ZOLO DEPUTY or the DAIWA Rebellion are good. Also shimano zodias is decent Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 For me, the best general purpose jig rod for $200 is the St. Croix Avid MH/F. You might find that choice a little fast taper-wise for traps and chatterbaits, but I think most rods really good for jigs will be. It's also power-wise on the heavy side of medium heavy. I've heard good things about the ALX Deputy too, just haven't fished one. The other Zolos I have fished are really good and around this price. Lots of good choices in this price range, I'm sure. 1 1 Quote

The 704 has a slower taper which I did not like for jig fishing. Quote

For me that's a little short for a frog rod, but about perfect for a jig rod. This is still powerful enough for frogs, though, especially if you're fishing from a kayak where the bass may pull you rather than you pulling a bass. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 24, 2020 Super User Posted April 24, 2020 Daiwa Tatula 7' 1" medium heavy extra fast $149.99 ? 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 24, 2020 Super User Posted April 24, 2020 Brand and model is completely subjective and based one your personal wants and restrictions price. Basically your gonna get alot of answers here. Most of us are gonna suggest a 6'6 to 7''6 rod either in MH or in H length is gonna depend on what you are comfortable pitching and skipping. Most are telling you 7ft, it's in the middle. Power of the rod is something you can figure out easy, if you have alot of docks, heavy cover, or even dense vegetation where you will be tossing these jigs, you can step up to q heavy. I like using a heavy especially under socks, cuz after you stick that fish, you need to turn that fish and pull them out before they get you wrapped up. ( and we have heavy hydrillia everywhere) All that being said. My personal jig rod is a powell 704, (7-0 heavy and it also serves as a big topwater rod) alot of times, I'll tie a jig on a 733 (mh) or 703 rod if I cant get away with it. I just bought a Tatula 7-1 heavy. All that being said, go as light with the rod as your circumstances and comfort will allow. But if you get the heavy rod, there plenty other things to use it for too Quote

RichF Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 The Zodias is hard to beat for $200. Super light, very sensitive, crisp blank, and powerful. They look sweet too. My 7'2 MH gets the nod for 3/8 to 1/2 jigs, t-rigs, and swimjigs. Quote

I started with a a Powell Endurance 764 and I love it. That rod is around $150. I just bought a G. Loomis E6X just because I have heard great things about it and it’s my new favorite jig rod. Unless you’re flippin super heavy cover, I prefer rods that have a great tip, softer mid section and strong backbone. I don’t like rods that are stiff. I would start with the Endurance 764! Quote
