BlackBassAngler13 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Does anyone know the history of CC’s Crankbaits? I believe the Super Spot was once the Hot Spot? But what about the lipless crankbaits sold at Wal-Mart sold as Bait Bonanza? I realize they are selling some of their popular lures at a discount but I cannot find anything on that specific model of lipless and it looks nothing like the Super Spot. Is it a discontinued model? It still seems popular if it is. Quote
BigTimeBassin Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Don’t know anything about the model specifically, but I will say it’s probably the best 2 bucks I’ve ever spent on a lure. I’ve caught a ridiculous amount of nice bass on the color you posted. Quote

Same, my first bass of the year each of the last two seasons has been caught on it. I’ve got a few stock piled in from random Walmart trips in case I lose one. Quote
lavbasser Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 I thought it was the CC Spot before the Super Spot. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 23, 2020 Super User Posted April 23, 2020 In the 70'S it was called the Cotton Cordell Hot Spot . Smoky Joe was "the" color for me . 2 Quote
swhit140 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 They work, I smoked about 25 fish on the dam last season with the Gold/Black. Don't forget to replace the treble hooks. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted April 23, 2020 Super User Posted April 23, 2020 Copper craw and chrome/black are my two best colors. I've had better luck with spots than with RES or traps. Quote

TriStateBassin106 Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Bait Bonanza is still sold at Walmarts here in NJ, packaging still looks exactly like this too, Got a couple shad colored ones since this is my first year trying to get Bass on crankbaits, they're cool little baits great for beginners and very inexpensive, if I catch fish on these I expect to be buying more. Different manufacturers have their own version of colors , so your Bomber could very well been called Smokey Joe . . I dont know if the Spot still comes in Smokey Joe or not . 1 Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 I think it’s awesome that pretty much the cheapest lipless on the market is pretty much the best straight retrieve lipless on the market. It’s definitely not meant to be fished slow on bottom, but my god is that thing good on a straight retrieve around grass. Caught some close to 40” pike on the black/gold color and it stood up to the teeth. Like everyone else said hooks need to be changed but that goes for pretty much any bait. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 24, 2020 Super User Posted April 24, 2020 also one of my favorite, cheap and pretty effective. 1 Quote
plawren53202 Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Just this morning the mini version (1/4 oz. I think?) saved the day. Slow morning, but tied one on and picked up 2 or 3 on the grey/black shad pattern, so it defeated the dreaded skunk. The one I used came straight out of the bargain box on the bottom shelf at Walmart. 2 Quote
primetime Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Whenever I fish ponds, and know I may lose a few lures, I only throw the Cordell super spots. They catch fish for me, I like the smaller model. When the Rat-l-trap first came out, the Cordell was the only other bait I remember being popular at the time. Its plenty good if they are hitting lipless cranks. I think the bait bonanza models are made for walmart, may have less expensive hooks, but since you are catching fish, keep throwing them. Quote
BASS302 Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Here's what I found in a couple of tackle boxes . . . first 2 photos: Both say "KING SPOT" on one side, the other side has DOLL on one, CORDELL on the other. These are among the first "SPOTS" I bought as a kid. Not sure why one has DOLL, the other CORDELL. These two do not contain rattles, just one loose weight that "knocks". One of my favorite lures when I was a kid (maybe because I only had a couple lures). 3rd photo: All CORDELL. Top "TH' SPOT", third from top "Ratt'l Spot", second from top "Suspending Ratt'l Spot", bottom "Super Spot" (in Smokey Joe color). Both "TH' SPOT" and "Ratt'l Spot" have totally flat sides, "Super Spot" has contoured sides with fatter belly. From the sound, "TH' SPOT" seems to have lead BB's inside. The others sound like steel BB's or something non-lead. 4th photo: CORDELL "Rattl Spot Minnow" Tip: Drill a hole in the belly. Then you can add or subtract BB's to make them lighter or heavier. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 25, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 25, 2020 @BASS302, I’ve been told by some of the best bass fishermen that I know, who have been fishing since the 40s, that the king spot is one of the greatest bass lures ever 1 Quote
