Quarry Man Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 Not a lot of deep cranking reel options for a lefty out there in the USDM market. Just bought a Champion XP 765CB Graphite rod for deep cranking. as for reels, I really want a 5:1. Looking at these two reels and can't tell what's different for the life of me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-16-Engetsu-100-PG-right-handle-From-Japan/133052779353?epid=1881685185&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item1efa904b59:g:P8QAAOSw2pJc29TN&enc=AQAEAAACYIQvEcHUrT7nmUC3yY5qbPyaBN1nJEDYW8MyypsJPgXKMrJ5ZnoiL5k7zr%2FQKfBqzfQNkxi8ra9qM1F%2Bn55Fr6eWrfjolqJoNHnOhRro2WNhnA3%2BJsVmYP3UlANmS4yiqyO6Q4Lerq7JdXKy%2FVPNmFvo2%2F%2BVQDdEhzp8MuGCsAf2uk8vSVl1Avmoqp6ORlJCkEhx%2Fr3%2BUa68c6UHIzS0IEVoZJ5EZxpzG7z9ElAORuiA2S9h8D2HD5IrBR5lHIBexH5fwCwArE955NgJ3nRiBUCqBY0CjRoy3ipjsDuICHEVfiFLuBHeXlnRDfl7t1MT2Ew%2BH%2F0BdeHjysC0artBfZZ7nidu6ZNnVirOxjqI828Ve2v5LxX0ofVsmyQLoTOxIralEekrKmvewresjHudj6TwyKGqBMNSHFvTfuNC9g0urreedvVxsb0ngWkJRmcnqNK5yNHkOy%2F3e7dsbMU0Vp5oS7lWx3ErNaZn8Tf9jA4soLDkT%2FlIeUm3YDvzjsdOdb%2B7reKwWqgaNh7nPDVITjLCSOkzn8f4a%2BEK2cTPWCM2g7FosdrxP14LA8CoEb7Wf4mVWa0zgIESvqxTHhbfeGRu9HOBHOv6xSKG3IkjR0ld%2FZB7ALrI47X76rfEuZEAEXVBTPnwjJQxS6ghodt5OwbluFWYtSCSZsZYbPmZIXz4NEn5LaKYbLt7jdy%2BCp%2FVnHcOO7c5CKXd7M8fLm42GuLuLAlOZDjZXznc4SDN4PuVls8RmIAJAOe4O1TjXdHaJpLnOIXUBYEii6Rt7PPBkkV9rkIZsJrJUaWuwUUckg5p&checksum=133052779353dc564d0a966349cc95c0cd2df92d0a85 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-Stile-SS-151-HG-From-Japan/133052709496?epid=915567773&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item1efa8f3a78:g:uBQAAOSwJ3dc27xA&enc=AQAEAAACYIQvEcHUrT7nmUC3yY5qbPyaBN1nJEDYW8MyypsJPgXKMrJ5ZnoiL5k7zr%2FQKfBqzVD6gF4swoEmFlshTk%2B23AbTjJwt37EPCXZiF%2Bgy36BuZX8zz%2FyK4UCwYm2oEK6WmIu4hLr2LdRY8paCQ%2F7DwOZFeMkbkF9qDU6PVAP6lUh%2BN2o9eTjpN2cnT6fzf7Bgd7HdFJJt%2FF8%2FFouHG%2F4jzx3xcGoz29yBSQA%2BazQYHxsf6jyLg4G%2F49JtAbwotSpeSCwnuaaUdO6N9PqObqqLJZuURwQy64sFpgwUVMKKqDz6EOI97MQPZWPaxKZaLvsXQsp0zz7D158d8PnAx8L2ydzFbRTfAq8qBO%2BjTuluvDpwlarhGAHewNJfFIu%2Fs6%2BAv6Q3DBEiq7L82JTqFW2WFYQRD5IOGJU79AM1wwSN%2BgigL6AgCF9kH8StN3jKgHgNL8DemHQVpRtXK5z8cCeg7taA6YvXmJj3WyEet5BLSZ%2FiMa3L6dq2ibWDH7KbYG6%2Bgs4M0yGUXb1oKbF10OBBj9u8L6ir%2BWrmC%2F6g7WIvQsIxLbRq98A1lxkt%2FoC%2FrsfIvUjCqspRFH%2F8cScAtUhATOLuc42mDZix3QMwk%2FKE9ckyaIXo0%2Bc%2FK11N3d%2BBG5eQ0OpXiA6iS9nY0TYLmPBSMdW%2BDHdoBJ4P9GDePg5uFNxC%2BpDlNyH%2ByR8y6DbIgdeLXc8cT8JbZY3ece%2BCGlIyxj3Ccf%2FyzqOeEgEc0hEkWwTKcTgXh1DnVhydG%2BGFhUkJberazRMkb24SeVrkNon1vgQKRHTnxM1cVz5pip2rmFji&checksum=133052709496e185a8f06528423a9c9a6a884ebe983f Quote
Cityangler7 Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 I use the engetsu BB for cranking and have been very happy with it, I have it set up with Champion 765CB, I pasted a link to it below. But you will need to order a spare Caenan spool from Shimano to increase line capacity, the stock spool is very shallow. I have the Stile as well , I have it paired up with a Dobyns Champion 764 CB with 15lb braid and really like it. I Have the Catalina mated with a Dobyns 805 CB and that's a great set up as well. Look into getting a Lews BB1 5:1:1 , that is another great cranking reel , but it's discontinued in lefty. Finally the Bantam MGL PG is another winner as well, I just ordered the longer handle from Shimano for it. https://www.ebay.com/c/13010775455 1 Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted April 22, 2020 Super User Posted April 22, 2020 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Daiwa-Catarina-TW-100-PL-RM-Left-handle-From-Japan/133320078130?epid=14025131911&hash=item1f0a7ef332:g:z-oAAOSw~MJeMm4e Another option/platform that allows for a good assortment/choices of aftermarket and factory spools. It's a smooth and powerful long caster. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 I have the engetsu hg model. Pretty much a beefed up curado 70 with a shallower spool, as mentioned above. Another cool thing is it has the drag out clicker. When big fish pulls drag, it clicks like spinning reels do. While the engetsu is a cool looking reel, if you want more performance get the bantam mgl pg. It's super smooth on the retrieve and cast great. I would put the smoothness up there with my Conquest reels. Plus the bantam mgl pg is a 5.5:1 gear ratio while the engetsu pg is a 5.8:1. Not sure what the inches per turn are though because I think the spools are different sizes. 1 Quote

I was planning on the Engetsu BB at first, but I am not a big fan of the casitas so im leaning more towards the Stile SS. How do you like that setup. I will be using the graphite 765, what do you use your rods for other than deep cranking? hope is the line capacity on the Stile? Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 23, 2020 Super User Posted April 23, 2020 I own both of these reels, as well as the original Stile, which is much higher end based (Aldebaran) reel. A few things to comment on. Both reels are a little weak in the drag area. So they're good for cranking, but as far as anything else, they don't have as much drag power as I'd like to have for heavier hooksets with heavier wire hooks. There are multiple versions of the Engetsu (like mentioned by @BaitFinesse). The Curado 70 version is the one that I recommend. It's an absolute beast of that platform because of the brass gears and aluminum plate. It's everything the Curado 70 should have been. I bought my Stile SS because I bought the original Stile when it came out and I absolutely love that reel. However, they are two totally different reels and for that, I've never used my Stile SS. Not that it isn't a nice reel, but if you can swing the money, get an original Stile. That being said, the spool on these is a little on the smaller side, so I wouldn't recommend it for bombing big heavy crankbaits. If you'd like to know or see anything else on these reels, feel free to pm me. I'd be glad to help. 1 Quote

When it come to the Engetsu BB , the Stile SS and the Bantam PG , The Engetsu and the Sile SS are good reels for cranking, and I prefer to crank with flouro. The Stile SS I cannot use with flouro , not enough line capacity, but with 15lb braid its a winner. The Engetsu BB is a great cranking reel as well , just you need to order the Caenan spool for more line capacity. I picked up the Bantam PG last and it out performs the other reels without a doubt, if I got it first, I would not of purchased the Engetsu BB or the Stile SS. When it comes to cranking, I really don't see those rods as multipurpose , for me it a singular dedicated presentation, I do not use them for anything else except for one. I have the Dobyns Champion CB 705,764,765,804 and 805, everything 7,6 and up is strictly for crankbaits, the 705 CB is a rod I can use for different baits, I like it for chatter baits, square bills, light blade baits and it really shines for suspending jerkbaits. Not sure if I want to invest $250 into a reel on a setup I might not use all the time. could put that money towards more deep cranks. am set on the 765 a it is en route Quote
