Jcj90 Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Does anyone else worry about scent on your hands going on to lures? I use a lot of lotion on my hands due to dry skin and was wondering if it could have any negative affect on my catch rate. Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I try to wash my hands before going fishing. If I stop to get gas on the way to fish I always wash my hands real well at the gas station. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I put sunscreen on before I go and I'll wash my hands after it's dry. I try to just wash the palms. Then I don't think about it again. I've never added scent to a lure. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I rub my hands in smelly jelly crawfish scent.then wash it off and dry them. The smell of crawfish lingers and covers anything else. 4 Quote
HenryPF Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Depends on the lure presentation I guess? Remember when the Bassmasters guys all used to smoke? Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I do think about it everytime I apply sunscreen but after a few fish my hands blend in with the environment. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I don’t worry about it. I will rinse or wash if convenient, but that’s about the extent of my efforts. 3 Quote
Smokinal Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I always think about this too. Years ago, I started carrying a ziplock baggie with baking soda in it. After I get launched, and before I rig rods, I scrub my hands with baking soda and rinse in the lake. 2 Quote
Finessegenics Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 It sounds nasty but one way to avoid putting scents onto your baits would be apply those fishing scents to your hand. I’ve done it a few times but I haven’t kept it up because it then gets all over your rods and reels too. Of course, you can always make a homemade garlic or coffee paste and use that as hand cream. The fish apparently like it, and it won’t be as smelly as spraying gulp juice onto your hands each time you go fishing. Quote

I dont think it would matter too much, but if you just wanna mask any possible odors get some JJ’s magic clear cause that stuff is strong! Quote

I also coat any bare skin and my hat with bug spray. I may lose a fish due to it but I'd rather that than become infected with a mosquito carried disease. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I’ve noticed over the years the my scent on the baits seem to matter more in the summer. Not sure if the cold is hiding my scent or the bass just take longer to process the scent because of the cold. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I don't worry about it. I have put sunscreen on while fishing. I can't tell it makes any difference. I do keep hand sanitizer in the boat to use when needed. 1 Quote
Armtx77 Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 Like 40lbs braid, rainbow colored lures, treble hooks and snap rings...I doubt it makes much difference. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 22, 2020 Super User Posted April 22, 2020 Just don't get any of JJ's magic on you.. Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 22, 2020 Super User Posted April 22, 2020 The more things I read on here, the more I realize some people think more about fishing than actually fishing. Quote

Not necessarily on topic, but I had a friend who smoked like a stack and would plant his own vegetable garden. He was always whining about the deer eating it as soon as it was planted. The answer is that deer love tobacco and would come to eat the butts that he threw on the ground. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 23, 2020 Super User Posted April 23, 2020 I dont even think about it unless its something with a strong chemical smell like DEET or gasoline . 2 Quote
