waymont Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 This afternoon I nailed a nice bass, 6.5lb which is big around my area. I had braid to a 15lb fluoro leader that was just tied on, so the line was fresh. I hooked the bass around some submerged trees, and tangled with it for a few seconds before I got it out, and had a really good strong fight with two powerful runs at the boat. After taking a pic, I released the bass, and got back to fishing. After three casts I decided I should check my line. It had a section that was rubbing on the basses teeth, the jig was way in there. I re tied my jig on and on the next cast got a strong 3 pounder that put up a great fight too. I'm not so sure I would have landed that second fish if I didn't just retie. You guys always retie after a nice fish? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 21, 2020 I check mine often. It's become much more of a habit since a lot of our lakes have zebra mussels now. Even that doesn't always save me though. Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I always retie before each trip, which is quite often but usually not on the water unless, like you mentioned, I've fought one in a tree. Cutting leader lengths and tieing leader knots is time consuming on a small boat and much easier at home with a shop light. Quote
flatcreek Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I meant line to lure not braid to leader. I’m a lazy reader, my bad Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted April 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 21, 2020 I’m always checking my line, hooks and knot without fail. I learned the hard way. Mike 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I’m lazy. Lately I’ve been using snaps for many lure attachments. I’ll give the knot and the line above a quick glance when switching out lures, but very rarely retie. No zebra muscles, deadfalls, or rip rap in my home waters. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I've gone several trips without retying and can't remember the last time I lost a fish due to line failure ?♂️ Quote

In this case the fish was big, swallowed the jig, and had the line rubbing on it's teeth during a really strong fight. You wont know your line was damaged fighting small fish, but a big girl will but extra strain on your line....and pop! Quote
keagbassr Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I have a rule I more or less go by that is: retie after every 3 fish every fish over 3lbs. And every hour even if I don't have a bite. Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 21, 2020 Super User Posted April 21, 2020 I too have learned the hard way. Now I just consider it regular preventative maintenance 1 Quote
Armtx77 Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 I retie before each trip and than check after each fish caught. I retie after 10, no matter what it looks or feels like. I usually don't get to 10 before the line just needs it. Quote
JediAmoeba Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 With pickerel catches oft times being 5 to 1 over bass it is just common practice for me... Quote
