I currently own a Daiwa Pixy and a Daiwa tatula CT with a BFS spool.  I use both to chuck lightweight lures for bass, crappie, bluegill, etc.  The Tatula with BFS spool works much better for lures below 1/8 oz, but the Daiwa pixy fits lightweight rods better.

I want a reel comparable in size to the Pixy, or at least smaller than the tatula, but capable of throwing lures below 1/8 oz in weight.

My internet searching has revealed several options, including some not-so-name-brand reels like the "Fishband" GH100, PW100, the "Tsurinoya" Spirit Fox.

Can anybody comment on the physical dimensions of the not-so-name-brand reels compared to a pixy, and their experiences with them?

And are there any more-compact name-brand reels that have an aftermarket BFS spool available?  My reel budget is <$100, and spool budget is <$50.

I have looked into an aftermarket spool for the pixy, but the ones I've seen don't recommend use with nylon/mono, but that's all I use.

Thanks for your help.

I assume this is because the spools are so shallow???

Sorry.  Can't help.

I think it's because the spool material is so thin, to make it lightweight.

When nylon mono gets wet, it stretches, and then it shrinks back down when it dries.  So on a reel spool, it might tighten down on the spool, crushing it.

Or at least that's my guess, the ad implies it may cause damage but doesn't elaborate.

The new Tat is smaller but not as small as an Alphas... I can throw really light stuff with the Alphas SV but it’s $260 ish.

Your already own pixy with BFS spool which is capable of 1/16oz lure. I don’t think you would find anything comparable is your price range.

But for the heck of it.
Abu Revo ALX with AMO spool, comparable in size and below 6oz weight.

A lot of those bfs guys do not recommend using mono with BFS spool, but I’ve read a lot of ppl using it. I used 4lb izorline on both Pixy and curado 70 with shallow spool for awhile and don’t have any problem (never caught anything bigger than 2lb on that line)

I don't.  Did you have a bad experience with one of those not-so-name-brand reels?

Also, I'm perfectly willing to buy used to meet my goals, so don't feel limited to current production reels.

Is that the revo next to a pixy?  It looks even more compact.

I wonder if all the revo models are comparable sized.  I can deal with the weight of the tatula, just not the size, so if I could buy the cheap revo and get a spool, that might work.

And I don't have a BFS spool for the pixy, just the tatula.  Should've been more clear in my post.

No this is not pixy it is Alphas Sv which is about the same size as pixy. And no ALX is the same frame as MGxtreme, MGX2 other Revos are a little bit bigger.

Again you already have pixy, buying just pixy spool is a lot cheaper.

Sportsman outfitters had the ALX for $129 a while back, reckon they still have them. Don't know how much the spool costs, but it's a slick little reel.

I don't.  Robert K is the one you quoted.  I was curious as to why nylon lines were a no-no in those spools.

I'd just use a spinning rod and quit messing around.

I've come to this conclusion..........more than once.  :D  And yet I keep trying.  Just like baitcast reels better.

Not sure what the objective is here:

Catch fish ?

Prove you can throw a 1/16 oz jig on a bait caster?

Spinning equipment is just too good today.

I know my objective !!

Same thing some ppl prefer live bait, earthworm, but some only artificially lure. Why?
There are advantages and disadvantages of each but I guess you won’t know since you never tried.
Only catching fish is no longer my goal objectives, but catching fish with things I choose, lures, gears and technique is much more fun. I don’t fish same lure that guaranteed to catch fish but change each time, try new thing or new color.

Today 1/16oz CB crappie slider jig head with smallest body worm I can find, tomorrow I don’t know yet lol.

The hoop yeild strength of a light weight spool far exceeds any force mono line can apply. Whoever is filling you with BS the mono shrinks onto the spool should be called out. Mono will deform and cold flow but it doesn't stretch and shrink.

Just tune up the Pixie and the appropriate rod.

You can find the Daiwa Alphas Air used on eBay for well under $200.  Cheapest I've seen was $130, but often you will see them around $150.  It comes in two ratios, 5.8:1 and 7.2:1 and weighs a bit under 6oz.  It holds about 55yd of 6lb mono.  That reel retailed new for ~$300 IIRC.

The rod is most likely the problem. With fast bearings and a shallow spool any quality reel will throw light as long as it’s on the right rod. I might not catch many fish, but I, myself, have never seen a BFS spool implode because of wet mono ?

I'm seeing people suggest spinning gear. That's great, if that's what you prefer to use. I don't like spinning equipment. Baitcasters are more fun to use for me. I'm not catching fish every cast, so I may as well enjoy what I'm using in between catches. That's why I like high end reels. They're more enjoyable to use and make the skunk days more fun. That's just me, though.

I may have a MINT in box Alphas Air 7.2 RH that I might be willing to sell.  The reel is amazing.  PM me if you want more info.  Thank you!

I was speculating on that being the reason for the recommendation for avoiding mono, although I wouldn't be surprised.

I use nylon rope for canoe tie-downs, and for sure when the rope is wet, and then dries, the tension goes significantly up, and vice versa.

Ooooohhh, that might be one to look at if the pixy spool doesn't fit the bill.  Thanks for the heads up.

You are what we call a tackle enthusiast.  This is the wrong forum for that btw.

That's just the nature of internet forums, ask a question, like "Can I drink gasoline?" and get these answers:

-"I drink orange juice.  Why would you drink gasoline when you can drink OJ instead?!"

-"I've never had gasoline, but my cousin told me it's great."

-and the relevant, useful answer: "No"

:)
