Flipping toad style lures.

Over the weekend i decided to try a quite unconventional lure while flipping along grass. I used a half ounce tungsten flipping weight and a rage toad on a 5/0 flipping hook. it didn't get as many bites as when was using a bandito bug  but all the bites were QUALITY, ranging from 3 pounds to 6 pounds. It was displacing a bunch of water. Has anyone else tried this?

Not exactly that, but I've definitely "killed" a lot of toads along grass edges and let them plummet toward bottom.  I've also gotten some really quality bites doing that.

The Horny Toad was, and probably still in some areas, a really popular bait for flipping into cover with a pegged weight.

 

Bulky and a lot of action from the tails as it buzzes down to the bottom.

Yeah, i was googling around and i didn't really see anything about it and i've never seen anyone do it before so i figured i would share this idea on this website. Maybe it will spark some more ideas from other people. That's what bassresource is all about.

I've occasionally used a Rage Toad as a jig trailer.  I didn't notice a difference in quality/quantity of bites.  Was a good way to use up a bait I probably wouldn't have otherwise fished (soft toad)

I like to fish horny roads on the bottom with a t-rig. First time I told my dad about it he looked at me like I was nuts.

The Manns hardnose Frog makes a great jig/chatterbait trailer or pitching bait. I actually throw Rage Craws, menace grubs, and other creature baits in place of toads many times, since I get a better hook up percentage and they give a different profile & sound.

 

Bass have no idea what they are hitting when you buzz a toad over them, same thing when a heavy weight breaks through the top of cover and falls on them. If the horny toad or rage toad holds a hook well then it is essentially not much difference than the Gambler Burner craw, or any paddle tail flipping bait.

 

I have been fishing in alot of ponds lately where they get alot of pressure from the bank, and most guys swim speed worms, toads and swimbaits over the grass....I will go behind and swim a 5" grub on the surface, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

 

You never know until you try it. I remember seeing pictures of a Hollow body frog tournament that I think Live Target put on down here in florida a few years ago....One of the guys who did well ended up punching a hollow body frog, so outside the box can pay off.

I'd definitely buy a "flippin" version of Keitech's noisy flapper bait.

 

I tried flipping with one once with like a 5/8 or 3/4 oz weight. Could be useful on those fish that want to watch their meal fall for 10 minutes.

In all my years of fishing, when I've seen frogs, they were never on the surface walking like a Spook. When you scare them off the edge, they dive to the bottom. So I could see how the T rig would work.

Doesnt seem like a good idea for me . My hookup percentage with big fat  toads is horrible ..

I have actually had a couple awesome days doing this because I ran out of whatever I was using at the time and a horny toad was the closest thing I had in the boat. Didn’t get as many bites but all I got was quality fish

 

believe it or not I have actually flipped a regular hollow body frog on a 3/4 oz pegged tungsten weight. I made a bet that I could out fish my buddy with a river2sea bullywa using it like a punch bait than he could with whatever lures he could. He ended up beating me 3 fish to my 2, but the 2 I caught were both over 4lbs. I wouldn’t go out at do this on purpose, but it did almost win me a bet.

Do not under any circumstance use a 3.5" Stanley Ribbit as a jig trail...ya might get your arm broke!
