dealing with green slime

My local lake has tons of green slimy moss in it. It covers all the bottom and all the stick ups and cover down to 12-15 foot depth. Just about any lure that I use as soon as it hits some cover gets covered in green slime. Anyone fish similar situations and have recommendations on what and how to fish this without getting covered in moss every cast? There are some nice Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike in the lake as well as Bluegill, Green sunfish and bullhead catfish. I mainly fish for the bass but end up with pike on the line a lot. The pike make it a necessity to use a wire leader or donate lures to the pike, those teeth are sharp. Any recommendations other than a wire leader. I know it is costing me opportunities at bass. I have thought about heavy flouro  leaders. Thanks for any advice.

Try a drop shot rig with a 2 to 2 and a half foot leader down from the hook.

 

You may have to use a saltwater metal leader if the pike continue to steal your baits.

I fish a similar lake and do as stated above with great success........a drop shot with leader long enough to suspend " Roboworm " above the slime. 

Note: drop shot is not a great option for heavy cover. 

 

You could also Carolina rig a floating worm. 

 

Lots of options to stay off the bottom though. 

Top water, Jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swimbaits. 

 

Try throwing a buzzbait early, lots of fun.

My HOA pond is chock full of green slime algae. One bait I've found that works reasonably well in this is a weightless fluke. Granted I still need to pick a little gunk off from time to time, but nothing like a crankbait digging on the bottom for instance. Also a wacky work fished on a weedless octopus hook works pretty well too.

I made a floater that never collected stuff on the hook.  You need to do some trial & error.  Part of fishing different conditions.

I fish a pond that has about a 4 foot layer of slime on the bottom and i have found that a light texas rig with the sinker pegged on a bobber stop wont pick it up. If you are having trouble with your lure burying into it like i do sometimes, you should try to rig your soft plastics on a belly weighted EWG hook because that presentation will sit flat on The top of the slime instead of diving in head first.

I don’t know there is any magic lure for green slime - but a weightless Texas-rigged Senko isn’t that expensive if the pike run off with it.  And if you push the tip of the worm just up and over the knot if will help reduce slime build up some.

It's not something I've done alot, but I have been known to "bubba shot" on certain parts of the lake here where the lynmbea and algae is out of control.  I've have some success with it but it not much.

Got that straight.

My drop shots - 1/8 or 1/4 oz weights, #1 or #2 hooks, small plastics - TRD worms, hogz, slim swimz

Bubba shots - 3/4 or 1 oz weights, 2/0 to 4/0 hooks - 6" Missile D'Stroyers or larger size plastics.

OK, here is one more suggestion: cork.

 

Yes, find a cork like the ones used in in wine bottles but smaller, and add it to the front of your bait.

I have found small corks at Joanne Fabric and have used them on Carolina rigs.

 

You can whittle down the cork to make it smaller; paint it to make it blend into your bait color; and move it up and down the line as you wish. 

 

Use a very small nail to make the hole for the line and then use a bobber stopper or tooth pick to keep the cork where you want it. You may have to use a bobber stopper in front and back of the cork depending where you want it on your line.

 

Not the prettiest presentation but it keeps baits off the bottom.

 

Second Suggestion: Foam ear plug you use for hunting, NASCAR races, or swimming. Not as strong as the cork but easier to use. You may have to use two of them but they will keep an unweighted plastic off the bottom depending on the plastic's weight.

 

In other words, a finesse worm, trick worm, and lizard will float better than if you use a heavy plastic like a creature bait or magnum worm.

So sick of the green slime in my subdivision HOA pond. Have been using my new Dobyns Fury/Lews Tournament MP three or four times now. The green snot is all over my line in the reel, no matter how diligently I try to wipe it off every so often while reeling in; and had to give the whole combo a good cleanup this morning. In particular there were gobs underneath the reel between the reel and the reel seat. YUCK!

heavier mono (or fluoro) cuts down on pike bite offs.  not as effective as wire but I rarely get bit off on moving baits when running 12lb or heavier mono.  if I do catch a pike,I retie immediately because there will probably be nicks in the line.  I'd avoid tying a leader because the knot will catch the green slime.  just run the heavier straight mono with a weedless bait like a soft plastic boot tail swimbait (keitech fat swing impact)

It's funny this was brought up, I recently made another thread like this on the fishing reports forum. I was fishing a pond yesterday that had suffered a fish kill recently (2 Years ago) Our state [NJ] has yet to restock it, many carp that fed on this stuff were killed off so the snot has been growing out of control there recently, I tried throwing around a 1/4oz T rig with a pitboss as practice for flipping and pitching, but the snot kept getting all over my rig. I don't like fishing places where this slime is heavily present. it ruins the fishing and our state officials should do a better job at cleaning it up.

For really bad slime I usually fish a t-rigged paddle tail with a small pegged weight.  The RI Skinnydippers are great for this as they are very streamlined and don't let the slime grab on, the Gambler EZs are good as well.  With a small bullet weight in front you can usually just snap the slime off at the end of the retrieve.  

 

Pike do love them though, but it's the most slime-resistance presentation I have found.

 I would use a topwater or something like the original rapala - but I've also used a float with a grub or wacky rig in those predicaments with pretty good success, particularly if there is a bit of breeze.
