Quarry Man Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 need a new reel for my Dobyns Champion XP 766Flip. I am a Daiwa guy but am trying out some Shimanos. I will be putting 65 lb braid on it. I have a 70 already, but its not used for anything special. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 Being that your using it for Flipping, where you don't make a cast, line capacity isn't so much of a concern, but having good gears for winching the big girls out of heavy cover is. Pick the reel that suits that technique the best. 1 Quote

Shimano doesn't include Micro Module gears in the heavy duty Tranx models. There's probably a good reason. Since line cap is meaningless in flipping, and the 70 has regular gears, I'd choose it over the K for this application. 2 Quote
Quarry Man Posted April 16, 2020 Author Posted April 16, 2020 I want to clarify. I was using the term flipping with the connotation of it meaning pitching. I understand the difference and I know they aren't the same thing. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 Again how far can you pitch with 65lb braid? 20-30 feet. You already have a reel that work why asked? If you want to buy a new reel just get one no need for excuses, bait monkey is waiting lol. 1 Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 17, 2020 Super User Posted April 17, 2020 If your putting a lure 30' out, you are Not flipping, rather you are Pitching. I'd love to see someone strip off 30' of line then flip into some thick toolies.. Quote

I can put it in a 5 gallon bucket at 30' on most "pitches". Am I pitching still? Honest question, not trying to be smart. Just curious which one I am doing. 7ft rod...same with spinning rods. Quote

If your reel is spooling line out, then you are in fact pitching. Under most circumstances striping out 30' of line, then trying to flip that into cover is going to be difficult to say the least. Go on youtube, and watch the pro's flip. Nowadays, the term flipping is somewhat misleading, i.e. you don't cast like you would when pitching. Quote
Quarry Man Posted April 17, 2020 Author Posted April 17, 2020 I made it clear that I could care less what the correct term is. 6 hours ago, Bass_Fishing_Socal said: You already have a reel that work why asked? ummm, because I have that reel on a rod already... Quote
Mjmj Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 My dedicated punching/ pitching combo is a 7'2" expride heavy with a curado 70. I have reeled 5 pounders through heavy milfoil and slop. The 70 will be a great reel for your uses. I have not used a k, but the 70 is a great size reel to palm. I have Diawa tatula sv's and preference the the 70 1 Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Personally I like a reel with a larger handle for flipping and punching. I love my curado 70 but I don’t like wrenching on it with as small of a handle as it has. I also don’t think that it would hold up over time as well as a K but I have nothing really to back that up besides owning both. If I could pick a reel in that class I would get a tranx 200, just like a curado K but built a lot tougher. The tranx is an incredible reel at every size. Quote

I was gonna say that reel is a bit out of my price range. I just looked on. eBay and they are only 170. thats not bad at all. Since its one of my nicer rods, might as well spend the money. now I have to choose between 3 great options, decisions decisions. Thanks for making it even harder 19 hours ago, Mjmj said: My dedicated punching/ pitching combo is a 7'2" expride heavy with a curado 70. I have reeled 5 pounders through heavy milfoil and slop. If it weren't for the durability issues som people have brought up I figure it would be a no brainer. Quote
ILoveHyacinth Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 I have two 70's that I use for pitching/punching and they have done a great job thus far. I have small hands, so they palm a lot better for me than the K's. Only been using them for about a year, so I really can't speak to the durability. Like Ogandrews mentioned, the smaller reel handle is a minus for me. Line capacity has never been an issue though and I even run a bit of mono backing on both these reels. Quote
