Super User DitchPanda Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 What are some lures or techniques where you feel you need the most work? For me there's two things that stand out for myself: first and foremost is the Ned rig... Now I've caught a few on it but for sure I don't have the magic of it harnessed yet. Secondly I wanna get better at ripping moving baits out of grass for reaction strikes. I can do well with swim jigs and senkos in grass but want to spend more time yanking lipless, chatterbaits and maybe squarebills out. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 For me, it's finesse fishing in general. Although I do use many of the techniques on occasion, hard baits are my primary weapons and I stick with them way too long, to often, when they aren't producing and I am certain the area holds fish. The other thing is also a change of mindset that centers around targeting big fish. I enjoy catching numbers as much as anyone, but have gone to concentrating on big fish. Although rewarding, it's time consuming and I'm no spring chicken. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 I really need to get better at locating mid-summer deep water brown bass. On some of the bigger waters I fish, the smallies pull an amazing vanishing act once the water start to warm. Finding them and then getting them to bite has been a real challenge for me. Much of the little success I have had, has been at night, super early or late afternoon deals. Sure you love to be able to locate a big school of summertime biters throughout the day. If I'm able, plan on focusing on that this summer. The upgraded electronic (G3N) should help. A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 I'm more of a power fisherman, although I have done quiet a bit of dropshoting, doing the finesse thing is something I need to work on. Heck, I'd rather throw a 5 oz swimbait all day long then just kinda stand there twitchin my rod every few seconds..lol 4 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 I need to fine tune my toad fishing . Got into it last year and made great strides but still missed too many fish . I'm always working on my casting . I guess I'm okay but not the same level as Glenn . 1 Quote

Super User Catt Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 Catching! I've been getting a lot of practice fishing...not much catching! During this quarinten I've had the opportunity to fish every other day. It's all bank fishing ponds with limited access to the water. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 I have no flaws in my game, actually gets redundant after awhile and simply remove hooks to even the playing field......nah. Need to work on mental toughness......wind picks up I bail. Been working on more accurate casting from a kayak around cover. I need to spend one solid day throwing a chatterbait to determine once and for all, this bait is more suitable as an Dennis Rodman ear ring. 2 Quote
Armtx77 Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I dont know if this counts, but I started pinching down the barbs on my hooks and my % to lipped fish has taken a little hit. There is a different technique, maybe even a different powered rod that may be involved. I'm just trying to get them back in the water ASAP after getting a quick picture. Quote

I have found that the Ned rig works best off shore and not used for bank fishing. Also, you need a boat and some electronics to be successful with a Ned rig in my opinion. As for getting hung in the grass with your lipless crankbait, remove the rear hook. This will reduce the grass hangups. You can thank KVD for this one. Tie directly to the Chatterbait's snap and do not use a trailer hook. As for squarebills, good luck. They are not designed to be fished in the grass. Try a weedless Texas rigged trick worm or a weedless rigged Senko fished on top of the grass, weightless, to mimic a snake or eel in the water using 6 or 8 pound fluorocarbon line on a spinning rig on your medium heavy rod. Good luck. 46 minutes ago, Bird said: I have no flaws in my game, actually gets redundant after awhile and simply remove hooks to even the playing field......nah. You may be surprised. ? 1 Quote
crypt Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 finesse.............and just getting to go.............kinda going a little nuts being at work then staying home, wife will let me pond hop a little, but going out to long is out for now. just gotta be patient. the fish ain't going anywhere. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 I’m just so reliant on soft plastics , mainly because my home lake is so weedy and shallow. And they work so well. From now to November, the weeds make it hard to fish hardbaits anyway. So my focus ( besides plastics ) will be improving spinnerbaits and frog fishing. 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 My own thing is working on deeper water structure fishing. I've been studying and working to improve this part of my bass fishing for a few years now. I want to be able to find that spot within a spot, that could hold bigger bass. I'll target them with a t rig plastic worm, my main confidence bass bait. 1 Quote

A-Jay I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say it on this site, but your best option for finding suspended fish in open water may involve planer boards... Quote

There's plenty more to trolling than just driving around and drinking beer. Well I guess there doesn't have to be if that's what you enjoy ?. But I know you're not that type anyways! 1 Quote
