I do t know what’s going wrong I’m using 40lb power pro braid I have a 7ft med. heavy fast action rod and a shimano curado dc 151hg and when I cast a buzz bait or lipless crank bait  it breaks and boom there goes my lure should I switch to flouro or mono ? Or any advice

Get a cotton swab, and run it slowly through the guides on your rod, to see if there any nicks, that would cause yoour line to break. Also, how old is the line, and have you been using it around rocks/rip rap, or concrete docks.

Most likely culprit is bad guide, has a nick in it.

Check your equipment first.

My line is almost brand new and no I haven’t used around rocks only lay downs and some pads and grass

Then I'd bet you have a bad insert on one or more of your guides.

Cracked guide. Use a Q-tip, and run it around the inside of the guides. A crack too fine for you to see or feel with your hand can rip your line to shreds. The crack will catch little fibers of the Q-tip.     jj

Bad guide on rod or the line guide on the reel has a seriously bad spot

Does this happen when regular casting or are you backlashing and the spool comes to a hard stop

Is the line breaking in a consistent spot (near reel, end of rod, random spot down the line, at the lure?).

IMO the only options if it's breaking during the cast are a nicked guide like others have said or your knot is failing. But I'd bet it's a cracked guide insert or like you said a nicked reel line guide.

It’s not at the lure and I know my knots are good because I’ve hooked a bar and set the hook and nothing broke several times so I believe it’s my nick in the reel line guide

I believe it’s just a random spot on the Line each time and it only happens when I use a bait I need to get out fat like a buzz bait or a crank bait never when I’m flippin or punching or when I set the hook

May be counterfeit. 40lb is not going to snap easily casting under one ounce. I was casting with a knot in my spool for awhile last season because I didn’t know it was there, it would catch on the levelwind every few casts and stop during the cast, even using 15lb test it didn’t snap, throwing 1/2 oz. Eventually, I stripped the line off and found it.

If it's not the guides then there are two likely options. The first is a poor know. You said you had confidence in your knots but it doesn't hurt to check again. Heck, make some casts with those baits on dry land and examine what happens.

The second option is that you forgot to thread the line through the line guide on the reel. Yes, that does happen.

Any reason you think braid is needed?

Highly unlikely but could also be a bad batch of line, although I don't think that's as common with braid. And like someone else said check that the line isn't through a rod guide foot instead of the guide itself. I've been guilty of that a few times. Check the lie for any fraying just to be sure.

Heck Will,

Your really posing a dilemma. Have you given the line a very through inspection? Like take your rig outside tie it off on a tree/fence post/something solid. Walk off what your casting distance is normally. Does the line come off the reel smoothly? Do you find jerky spots where the line has "dug in" to the spool and just a pull free's it?

Set the rig down and go back to your tie off point and walk the line back to your rig using your fingers and eyes. See if you can find any imperfections in the line.  Fuzzing, bumps, faded or discolored anything out of the norm.

After that strip off some more line and check it too. Does it look the same and feel the same as the first inspection? What brand of line are you using? Suffix 832 and Power pro have developed a reputation over the years for producing excellent line. Has it ever been exposed to high heat or left out in the sun for days? Last test is reel the line back to your normal casting distance with it tied off and wrap it around something and see if it breaks just pulling on it.

Braid doesn't like being shocked. Coming to a instant stop or jerk and it will snap. I have done this bomb casting larger type crank baits and the ensuing birds nest brought the line to a sudden stop and sent my 8XD into orbit.

Hope this rant of mine helps you find the source,

Where did your "power pro" come from?

I know more than a few of us have gotten burned by auction sellers and amazon.

Ya, only places I get line is 'reputable' sellers - TW, FishUSA, TD, BPS, Cabelas.

It was my line digging in I did something similar and that was the issue
