Bradley Simpson Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 A week or 2 ago i was fishing with my buddy and we pulled on our line to compare the amount of tip on our rods since i had an extra heavy and he had a heavy but after a few light pulls of my line a few inches of the tip snapped off. Anyone know why? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 14, 2020 Super User Posted April 14, 2020 The rod blank was already compromised. Maybe stepped on or cracked in transport. 1 Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 14, 2020 Super User Posted April 14, 2020 Let me guess. You had the rod pointed straight up and pulled straight down on the line. 1 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 14, 2020 Super User Posted April 14, 2020 Is it a toray blank? I've had 3 rods with them that snapped easy. I will never buy one again. Quote

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!! same thing as pointing the rod straight up and having the fish dive under the boat. Classic high stick scenario. If you held that same rod 90* to the load you’d be shocked at how high the deadlift capacity is(was). Nothing wrong with Toray materials in a general sense. Quote
garroyo130 Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Were you holding the rod by the blank up near the tip top? Quote

Anyone know why? What rod was it exactly? What kind of line? Was the rod held straight up and the line pulled down? More than likely, like stated above, the rod was probably cracked/compromised prior to your test. Quote
RichF Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 I've had it happen with a Powell glass rod and two Lamiglas XP bass rods doing the same thing. I'm very experienced and I don't high stick. Sometimes bad blanks get through the QC process. Quote
CrankFate Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Depends on how it happened. Most people say user error, but a lot of rods get damaged in stores, warehouses and in transit. I always find very noticeable differences in rods in the store. Some are definitely more likely to break. It is hard to explain, but you can feel whether a rod might break when you bend it. You can even feel microcracks happening in most rods when they are brand new when you first start using them. If you get the feel of this, you’ll get a lot less broken rods. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted April 15, 2020 Super User Posted April 15, 2020 Would've never happened with a Ugly Stick. 2 3 Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 15, 2020 Super User Posted April 15, 2020 Every so often you break a rod. You can wonder about how it broke, but you'll never know, bottom line is rod broke. Chalk it up to experience and don't do that again - or do it again and bust another rod. If it is covered under warranty, check about how to get a new rod - nearly every company is different. Quote
Bass Junke Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 I am not very good at searching for specific posts on this site, but MickD posted an article from Rod Builders Magazine. I think that was the source. It was an eye opening article. It should be required reading for anyone that owns a rod that costs more than 50 dollars. Quote
