Super User Mobasser Posted April 14, 2020 Super User Posted April 14, 2020 We've had threads on big worms. As I recall, most folks consider a 10" or 12" worm big. Looking through the worms on TW, I noticed that Uptons in California still makes worms in the 16" and 20" sizes. Have you ever thrown a worm of this size? If so what are your experiences with these huge plastic worms? Quote
evilcatfish Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 I've thrown the 13" and 16" Upton straight-tails with some success here in MO. Mainly fished as a shakeyhead or t-rig. I also really like his smaller Dragon Tail worms, super soft plastic with great action. I hope everything is ok, I've noticed the Upton website is down, TW is sold out, and the Facebook page has been quiet. I never did fish one, but there used to be a monstrous Upton worm which I think was nicknamed the "donkey dong" lol 1 Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 14, 2020 Super User Posted April 14, 2020 Anglers Marine use to sell some really nice 16" worms. Think I bout about a dozen of em, back in 2011. They were all hand poured. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 15, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 15, 2020 I've got some 16" "Bullwhip" worms. As big around as my thumb at the head with a little curl tail. 1 Quote
clh121787 Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 My friend is into throwin huge swimbaits and has molds for many ridiculously large stuff. He gave me some home made 15 inch lizards. Caught a 7+ on a bed at Montecello that wouldnt even look at anything ,craw, jig, zoom mag lizard not a sniff. After 30 minutes. I remembered i had those nest raiders and put one on my t rig. As soon as i flipped it in there she circled on it and started flarin up i think she even changed colors... I reeled the bait in quickly. tied on a bigger hook cause i wasnt sure a 3/0 round bend would work. Best thing i had was an 8/0 beast swimbait hook first flip back in she ate. It was awesome. Ive got a pic of it somewhere 3 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted April 15, 2020 Super User Posted April 15, 2020 I don't have any truly MASSIVE worms but some twelve and fourteen inch ones and some bigger lizards. I'll Carolina rig them for the most part. But they're still not huge, just long tails, they aren't that big around. 1 Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Not here in Ohio, 16 - 20" would be bigger than most of the bass in the state!! lol 3 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 15, 2020 Super User Posted April 15, 2020 I haven't talked to Josh Upton in a few years since the Bass A Thon event at Anglers Marine was discontinued. Upton's 18" worm is massive about the diameter of a garden hose. Uptons 16" worm is the same diameter as the 13" just longer. The "biggest" worm isn't always the longest. I sent a member 13" Zipper Goliath worms that are the "biggest" soft plastic worms I have ever fished. Tom PS, Upton sells through Last Chance Tackle in Hemet California and they ship everywhere. 3 Quote

Tom, did you ever catch any good sized bass with those big worms..? I never did, at least with the 16" version. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 15, 2020 Super User Posted April 15, 2020 Back in the late 60's I joined Pisces bass club in San Diego to learn how to catch Florida strain LMB. Other then live crawdads I was struggling to catch FLMB at Lowe Otay and watched anglers anchored down using big worms and crawdads catching big bass. What I learned was 12" DeLong brown worm with black blood line and boiling it to soften the plastic, then stretching to 16" and let cool was the secret. Split shot rigging with #4 rounds lead shot 3/0 worm hook on 12 lb mono was how to rig the 16" worm. Stitching the split shot rig on the bottom around brush with rocks uphill was how the Pisces members were catching big bass. The worm became to known as Otay Special. I caught the Otay lake record 14 lbs 5 oz in '68 using this worm and rig. The records lasted 3 days! Caught lots of DD bass on 13"+ big worms over the years, most at night at both Castiac and Casitas. Tom PS, Bonsai worms made a good 13" cinnamon blue neon that worked good at Castiac. 5 Quote

Super User Log Catcher Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 The biggest worms I have used is the Zoom Ol Monster at 10.5". I have good luck with them. Quote
primetime Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I picked up some of the Gambler 16" worms, but when I fish them I have always cut off a few inches....Its a huge worm, really heavy, but guys down here in Florida do throw them. I have snaked them through pad fields in order to cover water quickly and find some strikes. It's alot of worm for a bass to take and then get a quality hook set in cover from my experience. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 16, 2020 Super User Posted April 16, 2020 Mann's Jelly Worm. Mann's “Jellies” helped Paul Elias claim the all-time BASS four-day weight record of 132.5 lbs. Quote
