striper fishing Need Advice For Catching Stripers Rigging Advice

I really need help to catch stripers, I tried so hard and had no chance today at Castaic lake, CA. it will be sunny 53 to 78 and no or mild wind in clear water. Please help as much as you can about rigging and bait for bottom fishing and lures from the bank.

my plan is send one inside in Carolina rig and cast a lure same time. I am open to suggestions. Thank You for helping.

   Sure you can talk stripers here. The thing is, your questions need to be answered by someone who knows your particular location and circumstances. Other than @WRB I don't know who that may be.     jj

I typically either catch them with a huge top water lure or a skipjack herring. The bait can be dead or alive, 1/0 seems like a small hook but maybe that’s a different size in circle hooks. The one in the picture was caught with a 6/0 stainless steel hook, although the hook was completely gone along with the skipjack

so my issue is locating them, because last three days I tried chicken liver, worm, dead shad, fresh sardines and top water(7" pencil), and no luck so far, it is 24 hours in total on eater and going out tomorrow as well, going to send the google map of Castaic lake so if anyone can help me to locate them, Also I need to say the weather was 60 to 70 most of the day.

Do you see any birds diving for bait fish.? If not, then fish deep. A scrounger head with something like a white/pearl colored fluke can work.

No bird, the fluck is 6" is good with 3/4 jighead?

Never tried a jig head, but give it a try. the scrounger head gives the fluke better action imho.

That’s an awesome setup. My buddy that is willing to bang 2oz jig heads with zoom magnum flukes on the rocks always catches more striper than anyone I know. He breaks off a ton of rigs though, which is why I don’t ever try it. I can’t stand getting hung up all the time. Granted this is casting into the boils right below a dam so you have to use super heavy sinkers to get down and when your jig hangs up it’s gone forever.

I am going for cheaper set up here, I have 5" zoom SF ordered yesterday, and I am going to use the jigs I have, but in this dam I see no boil unfortunately .

ill be fishing from shore, download the Navionics and found single spot it might have strip bass there and going to try it. ill share screenshot of location today.

ok guys, update is I did fish the spot Monday to Friday, about 7 hours to 9hours,  I used chicken liver and worm and clam and powerboat blood worm and sardines, I didn't catch any yet. I thing ill rest the weekend and going starting Monday till I catch my stripers, I am still open to any suggestions, thank you.

I'm way over here in nc, so cant.really.help you much with you make other than remind you of a few little things.  While you are walking the bank keep an eye out for bait fish, look for birds, and any possible ambush points for the fish.   Stripers are vicious when it comes to chasing balls of baits.  Down my way they love threadfin shad and small gizzards shad.  I have never attempted to catch stripers on anything other than live shad or artificial lure.   Sorry no experience using livers.   On the other hand I have caught a load of them on spinner baits, soft paddle tail swimbaits, small hard body swimbaits, and Alabama rigs.   A simple rig that used the other day to catch them here on the river was a 4inch Kietech east shiner on 3/8 ounce head.   You can.go up in size and weight of you please.  I just take into account now deep I'm fishing it, how fast.I'm fishing, and matching the hatch of the size of our bait fish here.   I hope this helps.   Next time your out, look around and try to identify any bait fish or anything that is there.   Top water baits a nd jerks are effective too

I bank fished for stripers a lot a few years ago, but it's up north at the Delta. San Joaquin River actually.  

 

I used Carolina rig with frozen anchovies with both circle and worm hooks. I used Magic Thread or whatever to tie the bait to the hook. I never got a bite with a lure. Everyone on Youtube does but not me  I did not try lures a whole lot, but I tried lipless, spooks and jerkbaits, which were suggested to me. Ya lipless were fun from shore

 

Most of my good days were in early spring or in fall. Summer was rough.

In the delta we usually caught them trolling lures.  I did use live minnows once with a baitrunner reel, now that was fun in the tule fog.  In the lake I just throw anything 3"-4" long. Hair jig, minnow cranks, Slug-go, etc. But that's when we know where they are because of boils.

I bought blood worms yesterday, tomorrow going to try blood worms, I have seen some clip for how to rig it, probably going with single hook set up Carolina.

I can't remember. Circle hooks no clue. Worm maybe 2/0 3/0? Not big. 

 

Big enough to basically make a jig out of an anchovy...stick hook through eye, pull all the way through (with line), then stick it in it's side in such a way that the hook will pop out of it's back. Like a jig. A dead anchovy skirtless jig  Wrap it with a little thread stuff to hold it on.

 

Thread works great. Holds it on there pretty good. I casted out a mangled bait a few times after a strike and got a fish. Thread held it on.

 

And I MISS fishing stripers! "Oh it's a 10 pounder finally I did it I....oh it's...small! huh?" Powerful little suckers!

Did you ever find success fishing for stripers at Castaic?  What did you end up doing?

Oh yes, A lot. It is very on daily basis, someday bites on and you catch 25, sometimes nothing.

anyways now I am not sure if you can catch any, They mostly in the north right now.
