SuperDuty Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 So the new SLX XT I purchased a couple weeks ago got to the point it was extremely noisy and making a ton of gear whine. I enjoyed the real and especially the size of it. I’m considering stepping up a little to a curado but unsure which one as I know nothing about these reels or their sizes. I’ve got a new tatula 100 type R on it’s way already. I’m trying out different brands so I can find what I like. so I’m considering either a curado K or the DC. Also curious about the Lews Tournament series. I do like to palm my reels and only have average sized hands. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 12, 2020 Super User Posted April 12, 2020 I would switch to Lews tournament pro. $139 at Sportsmans Outfitters You'll never go back. 1 Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 12, 2020 Author Posted April 12, 2020 Been doing some reading on the lews tournament series. My son in law has a curado K and a lews tournament MB and says the lews is a far better reel. I’m definitely not brand loyal, always have went with the best available in whatever I buy for the $ I have available. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 The lews tournament pro is fantastic. I recently acquired a lews custom pro and its definitively nicer to me than the tournament pro. SO has em for 189 for a 259 dollar reel. Smoothest best casting reel I've had maybe to date. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 12, 2020 Super User Posted April 12, 2020 Shimano Bantam MGL would be my vote but I have no experience with the Lews reels. I do know that they have a 6 pin 27 position adjustable braking system though. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 I probably like Shimano reels better for their quality, but I do like the way Lew's reels fit in my palm. At first I didn't love my DC reel, but the more I use it the more I love it, especially if fishing into wind. Quote
Pogues2300 Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 Personally don't like the dc whine, but you could get a chronarch mgl for about 223$ currently on Joe's sporting goods website. I bought 2 this year and like them very much. You will also like the tatula you have on the way, i have one of those as well. Quote

Not all it seems but a few the Shimano reels I have purchased will easily develop this sound after a few trips and all it needs is one drop of oil on a q tip rubbed around the brake ring. I think there is a yellow warning sheet in the instructions that has the info on how to do it.... But since it's gone. I have both the Curado DC and the K. Both are great reels. I tend to like the DC better but if you don't like the sound of the DC, then the K is also great. For me the DC is smoother, casts further, and it will also casting into the wind when properly set up. Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 13, 2020 Author Posted April 13, 2020 No the sound was when retrieving the line in and seemed to get worse once the lure was closer to the reel, oddly. I just want a good sub $200 reel that’s different than a Daiwa. I want to try different brands. I loved the slx xt. But my son in law saying he lives his lews more than his curados makes me seriously look at lews. hard decision on what to get. I could press it to $250 on a reel but I really need to slow down, I’ve dropped Way too much on fishing stuff in the past few weeks. Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 13, 2020 Author Posted April 13, 2020 How would you guys compare tbe lews tournament to the Tatula SV? Something is drawing me to an SV even though i wanna go with a different brand fkr the next reel. Quote
Hower08 Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 Skip the curado save a little extra money and get a chronarch if staying with Shimano. My curado k gets "Geary" sometimes if that makes sense. I use it for my punching reel so not a huge deal. I use a Lew's tournament pro for my deep cranking reel and that thing is smooth as silk even pulling giant crankbaits Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 I’ve got both the lews tournament pro and a couple curado k’s. They are both awesome reels but I think the curado is better. They both have benefits but I think the curado will last you longer as I’ve already had to have my pro repaired after not even a full season of use. Lews does have the best customer service in the game, blows Shimano’s out of the water. You’ll be happy with either but I think that Shimano is overall better, a little smoother and tougher and last time I checked it was $20 less. Quote
Reel Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 You might have put too much line on the reel and it was rubbing against the frame. 1 Quote

It is the OLD Tatula 100 which is the same size as the Tatula 150. The new Tatula 100s are small. So small infact that they relaunched the much bigger old Tatulas as a 150 size reel to compliment the new 100s. You basically have a Tatula 150 Type R on the way. Yup. There are a bunch on sale from a particular seller. $119. I was checking them out last week. I wondered how they got a stockpile of old reels. Anyway, the SLX is quite a bit smaller. Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 13, 2020 Author Posted April 13, 2020 I’ve just purchased a Tatula SV103HSL. But i fish a lot and can’t play around with waiting. Maybe I’ll like this one better. I’m learning still and I’m an impatient man haha. I do read and research a lot before I make purchases so hopefully the type R won’t be too much of a pain the the arse. The SXL XT was actually a very small reel, my hands swallowed it up, but it still felt comfortable to palm. I supposed size is relatively debatable. Or so the wifey says... Worst part was I had to pay $194 for the Sv so I could use the $140 credit I had at Amazon. Quote

I had it happen recently on a Tranx 400. The line was put on, nice and evenly, at the tackle shop on their machine. After several casts, a 'hump' developed in the way the line was winding back onto the spool. I hadn't noticed it really until the reel backlashed because of the line rubbing the reel foot. That one cost me a Baitsanity Antidote swimbait ? Quote

I love my tatula SV reels they are smooth as silk and very consistent casters they don’t cast as far as non sv reels but they are very nice. 1 Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 13, 2020 Author Posted April 13, 2020 Yeah that definitely wasn’t the case. I spooled it accordingly when I bought it. And then suffered some serious backlashes and took many yards off. But it did make me wonder if it got louder because I had 3/4 of the line is was supposed to have. But still, who wants a reel that’s gonna be noisey when underspooled!? I’ved moved on. For what it’s worth, it was pretty clear this was a reel amazon had sold, returned, and sold again. I clearly wasn’t the first owner of it. That may have played a part. I’m not one of them suckers who feels you gotta spend the most money fo get quality stuff. Never will be! I’ve got big money in my family that I constantly see needlessly wasted. But I do wanna maximize my money for QUALITY stuff. I work for everything I own. Quote

waymont Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 The Tatula SV is a beautiful reel. Zero issues with 4 I have. Great caster, super smooth retrieves. You will love that type R too. I use Curado K reels too. Nice also. 1 Quote
SuperDuty Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 I really wanna try a curado! Hopefully i can fish with my son in law soon and give his a go. Quote
