ethanthomas Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) Im wanting to get both a Pfleuger President reel and an Abu Garcia Veritas rod. Im wanting to go with a 7ft medium rod and im just wondering what size reel I should get in the President. Im wanting to use these two because of the price being around 150 for both of them. This combo will also be used for bass. *Edit* I am also wondering what line would be recommended for this setup, I am thinking of using it for lighter texas rigs, shaky heads, and other finesse fishing. Edited April 10, 2020 by ethanthomas Wanted to ask more about setup Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted April 10, 2020 Super User Posted April 10, 2020 Since you said "which size reel", I suppose you're talking about the President spinning and not the President casting, correct? jj Quote

Make sure to add a bottle of KVD Line and Lure Conditioner - makes the YZH much more manageable. Quote
nascar2428 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 I like braid on my spinning gear. A 15lb eight carrier braid would be my choice. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted April 10, 2020 Super User Posted April 10, 2020 I can't really comment on a President Reel. Know nothing about them. I do own (2) Veritas Spinning Rods one is 7 ft. Medium with a moderate action. One is a 7 ft. ML-XF. I have specific uses for them. Both are fitted with Size 30 reels but not Presidents. Quote
STBen1215 Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Another great reel is the Daiwa Regal! Take a look at that one Quote

In my opinion that time has passed. last couple i tried were rough. go to a Bass Pro or Cabelas and compare the president to a Regal. the Regal is much smoother. if you want to pay a little more the Diawa excelor is even better. NOC 1 Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 I'd say a 30 would be about right. I have a Veritas 7' MLF with a President 25 on it and it is fairly well balanced holding it like I do with the reel foot between my ring finger and pinky finger. Just a tiny bit tip heavy. I also have a Veritas 7"MHF that has a President 30 on it. It is tip heavy but a 40 was way too much for that rod. It ought to have a 35 on it. That would leave the 30 for the Medium rod i guess. that will be the closest you are going to get with Pfueger Presidents I think. Quote
Allen Der Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 30 size is perfect for bass fishing. I run straight 8lb mono or 10-20lb braid with a leader. pay a few extra bucks for the president XT or supreme; the weight savings are worth it and your rod will balance better. 1 Quote

Plus, from rumblings here and there, the President had a minor redesign for 2020 and it's not quite as good as the older versions. I'd even consider 'dropping' to the Trion. I used a Trion-30 for a number of techniques last year and it did well. Added a Trion-35 to my arsenal this year. Quote
