My partner and I usually net fish for each other but we had a rough start, since we did not communicate well well in the beginning.  I cant tell you how many fish I took off the hook for him. :)

Our communication was terrible and we didn't know each others idiosyncrasies.  Long story short, we never loose one now and I net my own when I am with someone new

I ain't a pro, far from it. But I don't use a net because my 16ft bass boat is already cluttered enough with 6 rods on deck, a 30 pack of beer, and tackle thrown everywhere. Last thing I need is a 4ft net I'm gonna trip over haha.

I can see where tripping over the net would be a good possibility after you’ve drunk 10 or 12 beers.

Well then he'd have room for the net because some of that beer is gone...

I'm generally out with a buddy, and a 30 pack for two people over the course of 8-10 hours isn't much (for us). I've got a pretty high tolerance as is, and some coors isn't gonna get me sloppy. Just gotta drink water throughout the day with it, and eat food.

I wouldn't encourage anyone to do it, but I haven't had a problem with it. I'll chalk it up to being young. I'm sure as I get older the accumulative hangover will kill me. lol

Now I've got one buddy who can bring a handle of whiskey on the lake and kill it himself before the sun sets. That man is a walking miracle. He is the most functioning alcoholic I've ever seen.

Brother, before I started to ‘really’ fish I had never seen anyone fish WITHOUT alcohol. I actually didn’t think it was possible. After the first tournament I fished my eyes were open jack.
I ain’t 40 yet and the pain isn’t as bad as the losing a whole day as far as hangover is concerned.
Just can’t roll around all day with the local news on anymore...

You have the right name. Hope your 16' boat doesn't have a OB, the last thing your need is fishing tackle. That is 1 case of beer too many.

If you mean outboard, it does. Not sure what you mean by fishing tackle is the last thing I need.

I'm sure catching a hard time for mentioning beer, eh.

Isn’t boating while under the influence a felony in WI?

Mentioning a case +1 6 pack = drunk driver. Where I fish that quantity of beer gets you put in jail or you are hell raising in a wake boat with a boom box blaring, not fishing.

I dunno about WI or CA laws specifically - but here in MN, Boating While Intoxicated carries the same penalties as Driving While Intoxicated...including UP TO forfeiture of the boat.

Alcohol and boating does not mix. I've known this since I was ten years old. Rule #1: The most dangerous thing on the water is people, including you.

Been around boats waaaay too long. You (whomever) may think the beer isn't affecting you, but the couple you almost (or did) ran over in the kayak may disagree. I see it constantly and it hasn't changed in 50 years. Boater never even sees the skier/kayak/family they almost killed.

And this happens frequently even without alcohol! You need to be aware 360 degrees in a boat.

They think they're just A-okay because they're too drunk to know they almost killed someone. "What kayak?"

The drunk idiot is the last person to know he's being a drunk idiot. That is what alcohol does. The drunk idiot is the last person I would listen to when describing their alcohol tolerance.

Now combining this thread with the one where people say they carry guns in their PFD when they fish - wow. And I thought fishing was mostly hazardous to the fish!

Less than 2 beers an hour of 4% ABV beer over the course of 10 hours isn't even buzzed territory for me. I'm a big dude, and have a tolerance as is. I don't smash a whole case, it's there for myself and a friend or two included.

A lot of assumptions being made against me here. I'm fine with being scolded for doing something wrong, but I'm not doing anything wrong. If I was, I'm sure the dozen of DNR wardens that have checked my boat / licenses when I've been drinking beer and fishing would have had a bone to pick with me.

I've had a bit to much to drink before on a boat, that's when I park it and sleep it off. I never drive home drunk, and I don't go whipping around like a d-bag even sober. Some days my main motor doesn't even get started. I fish small lakes that are no-wake mainly.

As far as DNR has told me, first BWI offense is just a fine upto $300. I've been on boats my whole life and have never once met or seen anyone get a BWI in Wisconsin. I've seen hammered guys get pulled by DNR and not a word mentioned of the alcohol. Things are different up here, not that I condone being hammered while boating.

I know people who drink two beers and get lit, that doesn't mean I'm going to accuse everyone I see that drinks two beers of drunk boating or driving. It's one of those know your limits things.

Ya'll are free to disagree.

It's your story tell it anyway you want.

Causal drinkers usually don't start drinking before lunch or half your day on the water.

To finish 30 beers between 2 anglers, assuming they drink equal amounts, that is 15 beers in 5 hours or 3 per hour.

16' boat with a cooler big enough to keep 30 beers cold leaves little room for 2 anglers and tackle. :occasion14:

I invited some new friends to fish with me.  An older couple. Showed up with a 30 of Bud.  Mid afternoon they got belligerent and threatened to throw me out of my boat in SF Bay.  Took a while to calm them down.  I think I had asked if I could have a beer.  Asked the guy to pull the anchor about an hour earlier and got an F U.  Shoulda pulled the plug then.

If someone brings more than 2 beers now they can go in someone else's boat.

Not throwing shade on you Brew City.

I net every bass with my Ego S2(rubber coated). Never boat flip fish(break rods). I don't care what the pros do. When I hook that DD and she's slinging my big swimbait around, my netting movements will be muscle memory.

That's the net I have... Finally found one that meets my criteria.

I have enough experience to know that a good landing net is worth it's weight in gold. Have landed several ''fish of a lifetime'' with my landing nets and will continue using them.

what nets do y'all use? I have an EGO net and like it, handle comes off a lot. I know @A-Jay loves the frabil conservation (correct me if I am wrong). might consider that down the road. Keep in mind I am fishing out of a 14-16' boat

I do like that one- it's light, and strong and does the job for me.

Something often overlooked but is important for self-netters like myself.

It really helps if the net is "balanced" as well.

That way I'm not 'fighting' the net as well as the bass.

This one is that as well.

The whole evolution is hard enough . . .

Frabil Conservation in my 14' boat and a Ego S2 in my other 14' boat. Both work great but I like the ease of length adjustment on the Ego.
