Gun oil for reels?

Can gun oil and lithium grease be used on reels?

I should probably rephrase that question as I’m sure you CAN use it but....

Is it good to use gun oil and lithium grease on a reel? It won’t harm it?

I used Rem Oil on my oiled bearing for years. Very fast, very thin, and must be applied regularly. I now us TS 321 and can't see any difference besides Rem Oil can be picked up at any sporting goods store versus ordering TS 321.

I would  have to ask use both where on your reels?  Reel bearings generally require oil made for that purpose and there are many on the market.  Varying from those products could result in really slowing down your reels.  Two types of grease are used in a baitcasters, one made to use on the drag discs, labeled drag grease and a grease for the reels gears, on which drag grease may also be used.  Other greases are not recommended on drag discs. Other popular gear grease is Super Lube and Yamaha Blue Marine grease.  But again, drag grease may also be used on your gears.  TSI products can be tricky in that TSI 301 is a solvent in which TSI 321, a pure lubricant, is suspended.  If TSI 301 comes into contact with plastic before solvent has evaporated, which is very fast, it will cause damage to the plastic.  I do use it in which I dip my pinion and crankshaft bearings, but now I think we are beyond your question.

Break Free CLP is a gun lubricant I use on my baitcasting reel level wind worm gear to clean and lub and touch up spool bearing lub inbetween annual servicing for about 25 years.

OnThePotomac nailed it regarding oil. Different oil viscosity works better with different bearings. Shimano adds in Bantam oil as it was developed to be used with their bearings.

 

While some may use gun oil it with success, there may be better options for optimal performance. Each oil Bantam oil (Shimano) and the 2 different Hedgehog Alchemy Oils I use were all designed for optimal performance in there bearings. Ultimately, it most important to oil and grease regularly.

You can use gun oil, but it is a little thick for spool bearings. It's OK for anything else I think.

 

You can also use Lithium gun grease, but I wouldn't.

It will wash away with water and will probably leave a mess as it does so meanwhile leaving your reel unprotected.

That said I have used it in a pinch, but I would go out of my way to avoid having to do so.

I didn’t want to go out looking for stuff and remembered I had this for now. 
I thought it was lithium grease but it’s M-Pro 7 Synthetic Grease
