I don’t know if any one else has the problem I do I am good at bank fishing and shallow fishing i live in Huntington Texas about ten miles from lake            Sam Rayburn one of the biggest lakes in Texas but i fish it all the time how ever I don’t really know how to fish in deep water and target big fish also there is only large mouth in the lake so if anyone has any info on what baits I could use and what I need to do to successfully fish deep.

Catt is familiar with Rayburn and can give you specific advice.

Deep water is relative meaning different depths to nearly every bass angler.

So what you are looking for during the spawn period is deeper water near the spawning areas. The sharper or quicker the depth change is the better. Example is a river or creek channel cutting though a flat spawning area. The flat may be 2' to 6' deep, the bottom of the river or creek channel could be 10' to 20', that is deep water.

If the area has water over 60' deep with a island or bump the bass may be suspend or feeding at 30' deep, that is deep water.

Different depths for wide range of structure elements. Almost always a sharper break or faster depth change the better the "deep" water area is.

Look for long extended points that lead out in the lake . They are the easiest deep structure to find .Look for a thermocline with your depth finder , that will be the maximum depth . Look for fish with the sonar out in open water . Take note of the depth they are the most numerous . Go to the point and start out fishing  the depth that held the most fish in open water  . Then you can move shallower or deeper, just make a guess . I use a variety of bottom bouncing baits and deep diving crankbaits .Pretty  simple but It works for me .

That same strategy  can be used  on flats .Fish the depth that seems to hold the most fish .  I like to cover water on flats , so I go with crankbaits or Carolina rigs with a 3/4 ounce sinker . If I hookup , I toss a buoy and fish that spot more thoroughly .

First off, Welcome.

When fishing deep, as with fishing from the bank, there are many factors that you take into consideration when deciding what lure and presentation to use.  The first is depth, you want to use something that will get down to the depth you plan to target. Water clarity is another consideration as that factor can point you in the direction of what color to use. Water temp. will influence what presentation to begin with and last, but not least is what season you'll be fishing as that will point you in the right direction for location and bait size.

All these factors and more, will help you to determine what to fish with. What is working for me now, is useless information for you because the chances of all those influences being the same for you are very slim.
