I buy many of my reels from Digitaka in Japan & mine come thru customs in N.Y. It usually takes 3 or 4 days to go thru customs there. I see you are in Texas so I doubt yours will go to N.Y. probley Chicago or L.A. & more likely the latter. So there time will probley be different.

My last Digitaka purchase came through Chicago and I’m in Texas too. I can’t remember  shipping time, but reasonable.

I’ve bought two reels from Japan during this whole ordeal. One as recently as last week. Both shipped and received as usual and being from NY both obviously came through NY customs. Of course things could always change and the virus has really exploded here the past couple weeks, so you really never know.

Prefer to buy from US retailers. This is the time to spend money in our own economy and spark the US economy. Just my 2 cents and thoughts

All the money ends up in the same place. Plus, pilots, drivers, postal workers, customs workers, etc., all get paid by shipping items all over the world.

I ordered two.  One about a month ago and it arrived in a week.  The other I ordered two weeks ago and according to the EMS tracking it has not left Japan yet.  I am kind of worried about this one.

I think you are confused between a retailer and a manufacturer. I stated US retailers not manufacturers. There are plenty of retailers (thousands) of fishing products in the U.S

Retailers buy from distributors who buy from wholesalers unless it's Walmart who buys direct from mfr's. Buying from a retailer means going into brick and mortal building that is closed for business. If you buy online you cut out the wholesalers that is usually owned by off shore companies.

I agree under normal circumstances buying from a local mom & pop retailer is ideal as long as it's not BPS who is on my list after buying out Cabela's.

Retailers in the fishing industry can buy from distributors or direct (from the manufacturer). Often they do both depending on the circumstance. Often they will use the distributor to buy quick stuff they need as they have inventory on hand and can get quicker than direct. Pricing directly will always be less, thus much of their business is directly. Every industry is different though but this is always good to learn.

Companies like Shimano (which is a manufacturer as they make there own products) sell to distributors as well as direct to dealers. However, some manufacturers sell only to distributors who then sell to retailers at wholesale prices to retail to customers.

Also, there is an exception with consumer direct conmpanies.

My point is we are not buying American made reels, none are mfr'd in the USA.

Buying direct from Japan means buying product not available to USA retailers. Daiwa or Shimano are the disturbutors for thier USA products.

Peace,

Tom

Hopefully everything will start heading back to normal soon

I hope so.  This thread turned into a cabin fever February style thread and we're in April!

I am not trying to hijack here, but have always wondered about buying from Japan.  Quick question:  What does someone gain from buying there?  Better/ different products, cheaper prices, newer releases, etc?  Thanks.

Sometimes different rod and reel models and sometimes cheaper. I personally wouldn't buy JDM rods as I had 2 break in shipment. I wish Evergreen would bring there high end rods here. I want some bad lol

Used to be better products. The USDM were generally watered down versions with less bearings, different components, etc. Not so much the case anymore, but there are some different models and options still not offered in the US. It's a lot easier to import the items nowadays too since we're in the internet age with a global economy. Just stay away from China and use reputable retailers and I've never had any issues.

Correct. I find the product to be the same. But yes they do have some different offerings but much of the same

With reels that are sold in the US you usually get a better price—mainly because there is no warranty on a JDM reel if you buy it in the US. Assuming you are buying an authentic reel, I see no reason to need a warranty on a major Japanese brand reel that costs over $200.00.
