michael1 Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Never been a fairy wand guy but I have broken down and bought a spinning rod/reel. It is a 7' M that I will use for wacky rigs, ned rigs, shaky heads and other lighter options like that but nothing super light or anything. I have read a lot about guys choosing braid for their fishing line and I am a big fan of Sufix 832 so I assume I would go with that. But which strength? I was thinking 15 or 20 pound, is that a "common" strength to go with for a 7' M spinning rod? Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 10# is plenty dont go higher 832 will hold a knot to 14 pounds. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 10. Plenty strong, but you can still break it off when you get a snag. Casts farther than 15. 5 Quote
detroit1 Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 I haven't heard the term "fairy wand" since Harry & Charlie in the old bassmaster magazine.... Quote
michael1 Posted April 6, 2020 Author Posted April 6, 2020 I was thinking 15# too. However, after doing some research it looks the 15# has a diameter of .22 mm and the 20# has a diameter of .23 mm so for only .01 mm of difference should I jump up to a stronger line? Quote

I do 20 for same reason Quote
wordty Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 I went down from 20 to 10 on this set up for longer casts and was surprised how much more distance I got...Power Pro...I put 75 yards of a 300 yard spool on some backing and tie wack hook directly to braid Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 I run 6 & 8 lb leaders on my fairy wands so I spool with 10 lb braid. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 Last year I ran 10 lb. Sufix 832, and I landed a young 30" musky on my "fairy wand" with no real problem. No leader. jj 1 Quote

That is deceiving. You will notice a big difference in casting between 15 and 20. I don’t really care too much about distance with the 15 vs 20 but 15 comes off the spool much nicer than 20. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 6, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 6, 2020 I use 10lb with most of my spinning rods. 15 will work, 20lb feels super heavy with most lines I've used. 2 Quote
The Bassman Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 Line companies would do better to show dia. and not lb. test. Stated break strength is at best inaccurate. Diameters are off too but still a better gauge of strength. One company's 10 lb. might be anothers' 20. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 10 for me. 15 would be as heavy as I would go. Quote
Jaderose Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 I have Sufix 832 on mine and I think I run either 8 or 10 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 Well, I have been an anti braid type on my spinning reels, but got out my 15 year old Shimano Stradic 4000 from the box and decided to bite the bullet, so I spooled it with 30lb Grand Slam (8lb diameter) and may or may not add a leader. If so it will be 12 lb Invizx flouro. The bait will probably be a big stupid tube. And away I go with braid on a spinning reel. It will go on a BPS Medium 7' Carbonlite. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 20# 832 has been on one spinning reel for a few years now. I find that after a month or so of hard fishing, it needs to be trolled out to get rid of the twist, which causes some pretty obnoxious wind knots. I don't get this with Power Pro on the same reel. Super User roadwarrior Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 Step up and buy Smackdown. Quote
Undrcoverrednek Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 Not exactly the same use, but I use 10lb braid to 20 lb flouro leader with an fg knot. When I have to break off, the flouro breaks. I've caught a 30 inch red drum (in open water, no docks or pilings) with no problem on this set up. Quote

Derek1 Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I use 20, I have big hands and find it much easier to tie knots on the 20 opposed to the lighter pound tests. A little food for thought. Quote
waymont Posted April 8, 2020 Posted April 8, 2020 If 832 go with 10, if Power Pro 15. I just tried Power Pro V2 Super Slick and it's fantastic. I usually use regular PP tho. 832 is a thicker line. Quote
