Super User gim Posted April 5, 2020 Super User Posted April 5, 2020 They closed the ramps and docks in Oconto (Green Bay) this past week because so many anglers were there fishing. Tons of anglers from out of state too, Illinois, Minnesota, even across the state of Wisconsin. Boats with 4-5 people in them. Fishing is permitted in Wisconsin under the current state order but it is only supposed to be “local.” Well now too many people abused it and they shut it down to everyone. If this abuse of permitted outdoor recreation continues, there will be more of this. All it takes is a few people to ruin it for everyone. If you are allowed to still fish, please stay near your residence and either go alone or with someone from the same household. If that is not possible, stay home. 1 1 Quote

One is usually crowded...but when I went earlier this week I was the only one there. The other is kind-of ignored by everyone...they don't want to deal with the overhanging trees. 'Bow and arrow' cast works wonders there. 2 Quote
rboat Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 The local county closed all ramps, mostly I think to save money, (they are cheap), even though the Governor said fishing is still allowed, but surrounding counties did not, so to go fishing requires extra drive time. have not ventured out yet, but my patience is about shot. Super User Bird Posted April 5, 2020 Super User Posted April 5, 2020 I fish 10 different electric only lakes all within an hour from house, all remain open. Fishing in the morning, mid 60s, calm, overcast. 1 Quote
Tucson Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Just got back from Lake Havasu, 5-day trip. Might be the last trip of the spring season, they've closed down all the National Forest Campgrounds & ramps at Roosevelt Lake so that's no longer an option. Rats. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 5, 2020 Super User Posted April 5, 2020 Not. Outdoor exercise is deemed a necessity here. My fishing is generally physically/socially isolating. I've been sick though, so I've been cooped up. Looks like I'm finally clear to go! ? 3 Quote
Hartwood71 Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Ironically, I’m fishing more because of the whole coronavirus experience; about 10 times so far this spring. Working from home and need breaks. Lucky to have access to water and this website for added motivation. 4 Quote
Pkfish49 Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Too soon to tell for me. I still have plans to start my season on May 2nd, when Pickerel season starts. New York State hasn't closed the fishing season; in fact, they are encouraging angling as a healthy activity, as long as people maintain their 6 foot "social distance." For safety reasons, the state did just temporarily close a popular hiking trail and the viewing area, but it's a good hour and a half north of where I fish and completely unrelated to my situation. I shore-cast and boat fish all by myself in very isolated areas. When I'm on fishing trips, I normally don't interact with too many people anyway. I also haven't exhibited any Coronavirus symptoms. Assuming my hotel and the local lakes will be available to me, I think I can responsibly take the trip, Still twenty-seven days to go, so a lot can happen before then. I'll most likely contact a county official beforehand for advice, since I don't want to be irresponsible. Quote
Bluegillslayer Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 I live walking distance to a farm pond stocked with trout that no one else fishes so im good, infact i just fished their today and got a nice rainbow. And not very much people fish the main lake i fish anyway so i will still fish there Quote

The Town blocked the road to one place. They did the trout stocking there and it was a nice weekday and there were over 100 people elbow to elbow at the stock point. Unbelievable, unfortunately the general public isn’t very bright as a whole. Where gonna end up on lockdown soon if they don’t smarten up. I don’t think they should announce the stocking time’s online right now. I saw a video of the annual walleye run on the Maumee river in Ohio, lets say I dont think they were practicing social distancing. Quote

Pretty sure the city shut all access to the river if I am not mistaken, said they don't have the manpower to enforce anything so just going to close all the access points they can! 2 Quote

Vilas15 Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 Everything's open here so far. They really should shut down some boat launches like the most popular up in Green Bay which has been packed and is an out-of-state destination. I likely won't be in the boat at all until all is clear since I rarely fish alone. However, I have been on the trout streams this year and it's perfect for fishing alone or with a friend keeping their distance. EDIT: as @gimruis mentioned they already closed some ramps. I heard the fox river is packed and will probably be the next to shut down (hopefully). Quote

Not making excuses for them, but they fish like that every year when the walleye are running, so I don't know why the DNR thought it would be any different this year. I am all for everyone having their rights when it comes to fishing and hunting, but they should have shut that down before the walleye even started up the river, for that reason alone. Never understood the enjoyment of fishing like that in the first place. Quote
Jonas Staggs Posted April 6, 2020 Author Posted April 6, 2020 I have some spots I can fish that I will be alone, I might see someone from far away, or possibly the other side of the creek, but nothing close. The only danger I suppose is driving there, and stopping for gas. It seems like its dangerous just to be outside in public now. Really sucks because in my area right now spring has just started, I step outside, there birds chriping and flying, bugs flying around, green grass, warm sun, now is the time to go! Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 Just talked to a staff personnel at a local lake elec motor oly lake and got the OK to go . I'm heading out wed morning to chuck some spinnerbaits at pre-spawners . 1 Quote

Unfortunately, those are all private here and every one I have drove by has no trespassing and no fishing signs posted. Sort of. SC closed all state parks and DNR lakes. They also closed public boat ramps. All public waters are still open for fishing, you just need to use a private landing to launch or already have it at your own dock. There are still tons of boaters on Lake Greenwood. They are just using private ramps that are pay for use. Thankfully, our neighborhood has a private ramp, so I'm good to go. 1 Quote
Jonas Staggs Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 finally got the ok to go fishing again, got me a 3.4 lbs on #4 test with UL rod, using tiny yozuri minnow. 1 Quote

Cdn Angler Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Right now my urban spots for shore fishing, which are two big rivers, one is shut down completely and the other has no parking but if you walk there you can fish. Many of the launches are shut down. A few aren't. I can't go the nearby province as they have police barricades. I yak fish and can get a boat off the side of the road onto the river, but im worried I'll catch an earful from anyone on the river, though i don't see anywhere that it is banned. They've also asked us not to travel too far, but that's a suggestion, not law. I'd like to stay close to home but most access is shut off. Ill probably travel. This isn't the U.S. where you have 20-50 boats/day at a launch. I rarely see anyone. It's such a mess as different jurisdictions and rules. With a kayak I can launch anywhere, but parking is another story. A lot will get clarified on pike/walley opener. I wish someone would spell out what's legal and what isn't. Personally they need to relax the rules and open public space. It is cold/dark in Canada 8 months/year. People need to be outdoors. It is low risk for covid spread and we have a lot of real estate. 1 Quote
Rpratt Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 All of my favorite lakes are closed. Missing the spawn as we speak. Nearest public lakes I can get to that are still allowing fishing are about 2 hours away, and trust me, they are jam packed all week long. Fish are getting non stop bombing, and no one I have talked to is doing well at all because of the very high pressure they are getting. ? Quote
kylek Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Since I don't have a boat of my own, i rely on my father in law going. With this crap going on, he is too scared to go anywhere with anyone. I can't even talk him in to taking me alone. IT sucks.. Quote
HenryPF Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I have been blessed by incredibly crap weather in Illinois because I am nursing a cut on my foot and waiting for that to heal up. Covid will not effect fishing any since I live on a retention pond and the fishing has been crappy anyhow according to my neighbor (water still mid 40s). The other lakes I fish all have private ramps so when I am ready, won't effect the boat launches. Quote
