Hey all,

I've recently switched over from a 4/0 offset worm hook for all my TX rig baits to using a 4/0-5/0 straight shank heavy wire flippin hooks such as the Trokar TK130, Owner Jungle, VMC, etc...I bought a ton. I'm hyped about it, I've caught a lot of good fish flippin brush and tree stumps for spawning bass. But I also own several rods (all of which I built myself using PB,NFC HMX,RS Eternity) I notice I cannot get a good hook set and lose fish way more often if I'm using anything other than a Heavy action rod (blanks rated for 1oz or more) most of my rods are mediums or medium heavy (rated up to 3/4oz) The heaviest tungsten weight I go is usually 1/2oz, but 90% of the time it's 3/8oz. on 50lb braid, snell knot.

Am I doing something wrong? Not setting the hook hard enough?

I bought some of those Jungle hooks last year after decades of fishing with thinner wire offset hooks . I lost the biggest bass of the season with it . The hook just didnt penetrate the worm and fishes mouth .  I immediately went back to my old hooks , that have worked well for all these years .

I've always been a huge fan of straight shank hooks for all plastics up to the thickness of a Senko.

My biggest problem with today's hooks are the keepers...I hate em!

Trokar & VMC's keeper destroys to much plastic & sucks on thinner lures. Owner's keeper is some type of monofilament & after 2-3 fish is bent downward & hangs on all types of vegetation.

The second issue I have is short shanks, I know everyone flips, pitches, & punches with short compact lures. I'll flip, pitch, & punch straight tail worms & Speed Worms.

The Mustad Grip-Pin solved the keeper problem & has the fastest penetration of any hook.

I prefer a light wire hook over a heavy hook any day however a heavy wire straight shank flipping hook Has it’s applications. I have switched to the heavy hammer flipping hooks that were designed by Steve parks for those applications. I get better penetration with an owner light wire extra wide gap for thicker plastics or an owner offset shank worm hook for thinner plastics. You get better penetration with a light wire but if you’re doing flipping and pitching which requires short distance pitches and a heavy action rod a heavy hook is optimal.

I personally prefer the Denny Brauer Flipping Hook for everything except punching heavy cover then I step up to the Max 3X.

I believe they have a faster penetration rate than any.

Hated the Trokar flipping hooks, that point cuts the plastic so bad and then they hang up constantly, sometimes ruins the bait without ever catching fish. The Owner Jungle hook is nice. For me the biggest thing was using braid. I couldn't get a hard enough hookset with any other kind of line, so I save them for flipping with braid and use EWG hooks for any other kind of line.

Mostly 3/0 ?

The only issue I have with these hooks is their short shank, which is fine with compact lures like a Rage Craw or Bug.

For yrs I throw Mustad's older Denny Brauer Flipping Hook which was a good 3/8-1/2 of an inch longer & was perfect for longer plastics.
