My berkley scale finally took a crap On me and am looking for a new scale. What are you guys using? I don’t want junk but I don’t need top of the line either

I've been using a Berkley for several years now. I thought it crapped out on me but it just needed a new battery that I got from a dollar store. Good as new

I've got the 'Reel Sonar' digital scale - tossed the gripper that came with it and got a Rapala. Moded the scale by getting rid of the hook and putting a carabiner on it that I clip the gripper on to.

I picked this one up recently, I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I do like the bright display on it and the battery style that should last a long time. It is a nice compact, I'll see as the season goes and gets some use.

The Dr Meter scales on amazon are hard to beat for the price.  I have owned both the old and upgraded version and they both work great.  They used to be around $9-12 but looks like prices went up couple dollars but still worth it in my opinion.

Just checked these out. Have you tested them with a weight?

I have weighed different items including a 2lb weight on the Dr Meter scale and a rapala scale and came up with the exact same numbers.

I've used it for two seasons now and have tested it with weights and it was always accurate. I was always hoping it was under weighing my fish, but wasn't the case. Mine was $9.99. Batteries last a long time too. The measuring tape on it sucks though.

The one I have is the Rapala High Contrast

I purchased this last year , they have been a lot of fun . Every time I go fishing I weigh my first five over 12 inch fish , releasing them after they are weighed   . The scale keeps track of each fish , I think up to ten . After the first five I'm culling like in a tournament . Sometimes I add a few ounces to the total sometimes lbs . My highest total so far in less than a year has been just shy of fifteen lbs . Its kind of a rush when I get to erase a dink with a solid kicker . Any way , it adds a little bit to my excursions and even if I'm catching dinks , it keeps me motivated to catch bigger fish .

Theirs a review of these on this forum from a few years ago. After reading it I decided to buy a couple to see how they compared to my Berkley & Rapala scales. I was so surprised by the accuracy and how consistent they are that just I use them 90% of the time now.

Here's the scale..

Best way to check a scale, IMO, is to buy a gallon of water, take it to the meat dept and ask them to weight it for you, then test your scale against it.  Will be a about 8-9 pounds, it's well into the scale range, about even with all the bass you catch.  :-)

I use a Rapala which tested about a tenth of a pound off, forgot which way, close enough.

I picked up a couple of these back when this thread came out.  One for my fishing bag and one for my boat.  They work great, are super cheap, and are accurate.  If they get wet  or I drop it in the water I'm only out a few bucks.

The weight shown is the weight of the product, not the package + product,  not a big difference, but to be precise. . .

I find myself with a lot of time to nit-pick.  ?

I’ll nit pick your answer. That is not true. With pre-packaged meat, the meat is put on a styrofoam tray, the package is wrapped with plastic film, then weighed and the label with the weight and price is put on the package. If you have the butcher take the meat from the case, he’ll weigh it, then wrap and price it.

Digital scales are accurate as the battery power and batteries loose power with age and use. Change the battery annually and the scale should be within +- 1%.

If you plan to use the scale for record fish weights it needs to be certified by your states Weights & Measures department or sent to the IGFA.

The luggage scales are accurate and inexpensive, perfect for recreational use.

If the digital scale isn't working change the battery before buying a new scale.

Spring scales don't need a battery but difficult to read accurately.

I am not a fan of the MLF type scale with clip on fish grippers unless the bass has calmed down. Understand MLF contestants are under the clock, we are not, handle the bass with care when weighing and releasing.

Whatever scale you get, do NOT get one with a metal hook.  If you do, please also buy a clamp like MN Fisher has done.  Sticking the hook into the gills causes damage to the fish not to mention there is nothing holding the fish other than its own weight, so the fish can easily flop off and smack on the ground or floor and die.

Ya - I like my mod because the gripper easily separates from the scale. Most I've seen, the gripper is integral to the scale. This way I can get the fish gripped without fumbling with the scale dangling off, then just hook it on.

Yes, I tared the scale with the empty gripper on.

Not sure how you fish or if you fish tournaments, but the Rapala touch screen tournament scale is the bees knees.  It weighs your fish, culls your limit in handy little little bins that are very easy to change (even for a tech idiot like me), very accurate.  Heck, it even displays the temperature for you.  This is a piece of equipment I wouldn’t live without.  It’s like $50.  I would pay way more to replace it if I had to.

That is not true.  Pre-packaged meat is put on a styrofoam tray, then wrapped in plastic, then according to whatever the number is on the bottom of the tray they put that number in the scale that prints the label, it tares the scale to remove the packaging weight, and the weight of the actual product is priced.  I worked in a meat room wrapping meat at a grocery store for several years when I was younger. The weight of the packaging is rolled into the cost of the product inside usually.

In fact, the luggage scale up above that I bought has a tare button on it.  I use a fish grips to hold my fish when I weigh it.  So I turn the scale on, hit the tare button to zero it out and remove the weight of the fish grips and I get a true reading of how much the fish weighs.

I have the same scale. It got wet a season ago and was acting wonky. I bought a water resistant Kastking scale to replace it. That scale died over the winter. I opened 2 packs of fresh batteries and it won’t turn on anymore.

I then went and purchased a Smith’s portable electronic scale. While putting it in my tackle box I came across the Real Sonar scale and turned it on. It works! It must have dried out. I put fresh batteries in it and now have 2 working scales

I was perusing around Amazon and found a few others that look identical. I think it's a generic and different people put their own label on it.

You have just opened my eyes. My Baker Electronics has a hook standard and i have those exact Rapala fish grips. I HATE clipping that hook to the split ring everytime.

Just be sure to Tare-out the scale with the 'empty' grips hooked on. Then your weighing will be more accurate.
