Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 3, 2020 Super User Posted April 3, 2020 Well, after owning my boat for a few months and using it pretty heavily the last month I decided that with my fishing style I would benefit from a set of power poles. I have the spot lock on my TM which works great while sitting in deeper water and casting a crankbait, spinnerbait, etc, or drop shotting over cover. As of late I have been fishing a lot of skinny water and in really windy conditions. The thing with the spot lock is that it faces the bow into the wind so it makes it real difficult to pull up on a spot and try to use the spot lock when it turns the boat all the way around. Also when there are two of us fishing it can put one guy at a real disadvantage. I noticed one other thing that may have just been my mind trying to play games with me, but I noticed that I would pull up in an area (2ft of water) and catch a fish fairly quick. If I engaged the spot lock and fished there for a few minutes the water would become disturbed and the bites were few and far between. Like I said, this may have just been in my mind. Those things convinced me that I would probably get better use out of a set of poles. I just went with the Sportsman series in 8 foot and ordered the foot controls. I think this will help greatly when fishing the wind, which is an everyday occurrence here in Oklahoma. Should have them in next week but I am going to pay the shop to install them instead of attempting to do it myself. 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 3, 2020 Super User Posted April 3, 2020 Congrats. Silence is the big plus with them. Also, if you have to launch alone, they are VERY handy. My next boat will have a pair. 1 Quote
Logan S Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Best accessories on my boat, would give up a lot before I gave them up. You'll love them. To use the cliche...They really are game changers in shallow water fishing . 1 Quote

I fish alone 90% of the time and @A-Jay also mentioned that in a different thread (although he has the talons) so I am really looking forward to that as well. 2 Quote
Elkins45 Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 Pardon my ignorance but how do they help if you launch alone? Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 4, 2020 Super User Posted April 4, 2020 Congrats on your purchase. I hope they are just what you are looking for. I had a pair and only used them a few times in 3 years. The water is too deep for them the way that I normally fish. Mine now live in Houston TX. I use spot lock for launching and loading when alone. Speaking for myself...I have the remote in my truck and if I'm alone I'll just back it down right next to the dock, when it starts to float off I hit the down button...Poles go down, I pull out and park, walk back and hop on boat. Heck I do this with a partner most of the time too, it's so easy and fast. Obviously you have to realize there is a chance for something to go wrong, so I only really do it when it's a bit warmer out and not too crowded in case I need to swim for it . Even just in general for docking if alone, you can pull into a slip or dock and drop the poles before getting out of the driver seat, so you don't drift away while getting up to tie off. 2 Quote

I think for me it will help when pulling up on the bank. I usually pull up on the bank when fishing alone and when it's real windy I have to worry about the back end of my boat blowing around and with these I wont have to worry about it. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 4, 2020 BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 4, 2020 Yep, exactly. Launch the boat, beach it, deploy poles, then go park your rig. The ONLY time this hasn't worked for me, is when a wake boat came by inside the no-wake buoys. The resulting tidal wave lifted the back of my boat up, disengaging the poles while swamping my boat full of water. Fortunately there was another boater at the launch that grabbed my boat before it floated away. Congrats on your poles. You'll love them. 1 Quote
