Infernal75 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 Howdy ya'll, I've got a new fishing rig that I've set up and I'm wondering if I've screwed up by matching a reel to the wrong rod. Falcon Bucoo SR Casting Rod + Pflueger President Spincast Reel (8lb. Trilene XT) I'm specifically worried because it seems like my fishing line is taking a pretty steep angle down to the first guide. I think The Bucoo SR is considered part of Falcon's 'low-rider' rods where the guides are micro and particularly close to the blank. I seem to be getting some significant line abrasion right at the nose cone of the reel when casting and I was wondering if, when under load, the line is scraping too hard against the nose cone BECAUSE it's at such a seemingly steep angle. Can anybody tell me if the line is supposed to come out of the reel at such a significant angle? Should I get a different rod for this reel? Anybody have a suggestion for a better rod around $100? JediAmoeba Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 Usually on spin cast reels the abrasion comes from the line pick up in the reel. The nose cone is usually smooth like a guide and will not cause this - in short, the angle here should not matter at all. 1 Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 2, 2020 Super User Posted April 2, 2020 If that is a MH rod, 8 lb line is a little light. If it is the line that came with the reel, that often isn't a high quality or even a mid-range quality line. If I was getting a new rod and I was going to mount a spin cast reel on it, I'd go medium or medium light. I might upgrade the line to a top quality 10 lb mono. That reel would probably handle up to 15 lb line relatively well - I'm thinking a Yozuri co-polymer or something like that. So, the first culprit for the line abrasion issue might be the nose cone of the reel. Secondarily I think that line quality might be a little suspect. Falcon Bucco SR casting rods come in several different actions, I wonder what action this particular rod is. All I got for now Quote
Infernal75 Posted April 2, 2020 Author Posted April 2, 2020 Fishes, the rod is medium power, moderate action. I like crankbaits so that's why I ended up with Medium/Moderate. The rod says it'll work with 8lb. up to 17lb. Quote
