braided line fraying every session?

Hi all

 

I noticed my braided line started fraying after every session and so i did a check on my rod and reel guide and didn't find any issues.

I thought that it would be a bad batch of line(was use suffix) and thus changed to J-braid. Same problem occurred again and then i changed my line to Power pro but the problem still remain..

 

I've tried changing reel and rod but it still has the same problem.

I am mostly fishing in areas filled with hydrilla and i thought that might be the problem.. I went to tried to fish in an open water still got the same problem..

I do tie leader btw.

any advice on this issue?

Wow. Never had that problem. at least that quickly and badly. Since it's all the line you are casting, it's got to be in the rod, not in the water. The guides are most suspect. Otherwise... Does the lake water burn your skin? Are all the fish belly up? :))

I use power pro and have never seen it that bad. Some fraying and fuzzy look is normal on all braids after using it. I’ve had some fraying right above my leader connection using 10-20lb power pro on my spinning outfits and all’s I would do it cut back a couple feet next time I retied. My guess it’s gotta be your level wind on your reel or a guide. I would check again. Shine a light on all your guides and inspect thoroughly. Sometimes running the qtip through the guide isn’t as effective as most people think.

Wow.....I have some old Power pro on one of my rods that is way passed time for changing.  Probably 5 years old but it doesn't look NEARLY that bad.  You got a problem somewhere.

I’ve noticed something like that on some PowerPro Super Slick 8, but only at the knot or where the line was cut.  As a guy who uses nothing but braid, I’ve never seen that before. Do you let the line run between your fingers as you reel in? You’ve changed the rod, reel and line without getting different results. You are the only thing that hasn’t changed.

What reel are you using?  I have seen something like this on some of the older reels from BPS/Lews/Abu Garcia where the line pawl guide would get grooved from using braid but it was caused by torquing on the reel too much.  I think that year a lot reels shared the same pawl.  It would be an easy thing to check on though.

 Clean the guides up and then inspect them. Take a Q-tip and pull a little of the cotton out so it fluffs up and run it around inside of each guide. The cotton should stick in any hard to see cracks in the guides.

 

The only other thing making contact with the line other than the guides is the line guide on the reel.

It's happening from your knot repeatedly hitting the guide on its way out. The only way to stop that is by burning the end of the tag with a lighter.

Chech the guides for sure, and the level wind on the reel.

 

Of topic but good looking FG.  Bet I can guess the rod.

How is that causing it? OP states it's all along the line.

The OP is asking about the line fray, not the tag end of the knot.  Took me a second to realize what you were referring to

If you are changing the line, rod, and reel and it keeps happening it's where you are casting or you, not the gear.

I had the identical problem with my rod and reel.  I tried different braid types with no change.  The fraying would be there after only one casting session.  I checked the guides and they were all perfect.  I then checked my reel.  I noticed that on the edge of the top of the line spool there were nicks that were causing the line to fray during the cast.  I used fine sandpaper to clean up the spoon and that solved my problem.

Very common. Doesn't matter if it's braided line or fused line or unifilament line. Normal wear and tear after about 100 hours. The coating wears off and it gets fuzzy hampering distance on spinning gear. Not so much on baitcasting gear.

I have this same issue with my braided line. I just noticed the fraying when I respooled with new (300)yd spool of spiderwire 6lb diameter I purchased from Walmart. I was guessing the protecting coating on the particular spool was defective since the fraying occurred on all the reels I respooled. This hasn't happened before and I was just guessing the line was a bad lot. Like others, the line started fraying after a few days casting. I'm going to check my rod guides and my reels closely this time.
