Connect the battery cables then coat with dielectric grease. Don't coat before the connection because the grease will prevent electrical conductivity. 7 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 30, 2020 Super User Posted March 30, 2020 Lead acid wet cell batteries create acidic gases when charging and discharging, that is why the cell caps are vented. Any dissimilar metals sacrifice to each other excellerated by current and acids, the bye product is the white oxides that biuld up on the battery terminals. Grease or vasoline will help to seal the metal but can't eliminate the corrosion. Felt washer pads with dialectic grease placed under the clean battery terminal connection helps and after fastening the battery cable tightly coating the entire post and terminal as stated helps. Clean and sealed. To eliminate the corrosion problem use sealed AGM batteries with clean and sealed terminal connections. Tom Quote

rboat Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 When your boat is not being used, if possible keep the back hatch lid where the batteries are, open at all times. This will quickly vent out the gasses and keep them from attacking the terminals. Of course, clean and seal connections as stated by everyone above. Quote
bogfrog Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 Baking soda and water will neutralize acid. Mix it up and pour it on, being careful none gets inside the battery. It will foam until the acid is neutralized. You can wipe it clean and pour a bit more on and leave it to dry to protect from any future acid leaking out. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 1, 2020 Super User Posted April 1, 2020 While baking soda will clean off the acidic corrosion products it's an alkaline and another electrolyte that causes galvanic corrosion with the similar results. You need to take the battery out of the boat and be able to rinse the battery thoroughly with water and collect the run off. For these reseasons using baking soda may not be the best advice.
