Hi there, first time posting! Recently ordered a Shimano Bantam MGL XG from Japan and upon recieving the reel and trying to spool it up, when i depress the thumb bar the spool overruns severely. wondering if this is typical of a bantam or if I might have a defective reel. This is my first Shimano MGL reel, however i do own a curado k, DC and an SLX Xt, all of which this does not happen with. If I tighten the spool tension knob quite a bit, the problem seems to go away. any input would be great!

Sounds like the combination of two things

1) The spool is in 'free-spin' (tension turned off)

and

2) Line memory - the line wants to be 'looser' than it is on the spool.

Only suggestions I have is to tighten the tension knob a bit

and/or

Get a good line conditioner (KVD) to reduce line memory.

If spool tension is set where you want it to be and casting causes no problem, then simply have part of your thumb on the spool when disengaging.

I don’t want to echo anyone else saying but just wanna give out some thought in detail.

First spooling new line, mono or FC of course the line want to jump out of spool because the line haven’t develop small coil  just yet and still remain memory from being in bigger coil (filler spool).

Secondly bantam got silent tune bearing with spring in housing, this to prevent any vibration may occur from too loose of tension on unbalance on brake blocks. You will hardly feel in-out play on bantam , meaning you might not know you have spool tension too loose.

Thanks for all the informative replies! I spooled it up with some braid and the problem does seem to be far less noticeable. Still seems like the spool tension has to be cranked down compared to other reels, especially to have a half ounce lure fall controlled.

I had to strip some line off one of my bantams the other day. I like a full spool but I must have over filled  this one. After I stripped off about 15' the reel was much more manageable.

I've had to do the same, with braid and copoly. I make sure not to over-fill the spool on my Bantams now.

The tension knobs on these newer Shimanos need more cranking than older reels. IDK if that's the problem you're having, but I do notice all my K's, Bantums, and Metaniums need to be tighten farther than any of my older E series reels.

Second, IDK if this could cause what you're running into, but maybe the reel is over spooled. I do know that over spooled reels will tend to nest up on casts.
