I decided to rearm my Onyx A/M 24 PFD. This is the first time I’ve ever done it. I read the instructions, the bobbin was pretty difficult to get on, but I prevailed. Then I screwed the cylinder on and FAIL! It appears the pin was still up and once I screwed it all the way in, boom! I’m not sure what the heck happened. The wife got a good laugh out of me saying, “no no no” as it’s inflating.

Every vest model is slightly different, but it sounds like the manual pull tab was pulled and not reset before you installed the new CO2 cylinder.

The manual cord was never pulled and still green.

I have done the same thing, never bothered to buy a new co2 can. Will the officer check to see I have one installed?

I just installed a re-arming kit on my 2 Cabela PFD's a couple weeks ago. I replaced the cylinder & bobbin together at the same time. The bobbin shouldn't be hard to go in, it should just slide down the tube easily.

I shot a CO2 cylinder across the garage once trying to rearm my automatic Mustang vest. My poor wife nearly died laughing at me.

Only if he finds you floating face down.

Interesting, it took quite the effort to get the old off and the new on.

If you do a build up and embellish it a bit this is a great story to tell in a group of friends when the conversation needs a lift. The nonono thing is the best part. The visualization of that happening is funny.

For some reason, the pin was still out or the cylinder would not have gone off.  Is the pin accessible to feel or see what its position is?  I found on one model that the shear pins were so weak I couldn't get them to work, finally used the rubber tapered pins that are used to pin bullet weights in place.  Has worked for years, still will shear as they should (test the system before trusting it blindly).

I watched a YT video on how to rearm them. It appears I installed the bobbin incorrectly which caused to fire as soon as I installed the cylinder. I’ll order a new rearming kit today and try it again when it arrives.

But...I would be at the bottom bc I don't have anything to inflate it haha

I feel your pain 12pound . I have the same vest and the picture shown looks like you are supposed to put the bobbin in the way that is too tight. I struggled with it and finally used a youtube video that shows the correct way. Live and learn. At least not a total waste, the wife got a good laugh. I normally have to rearm every few years because they will eventually just inflate on their own due to age or humidity. Now I use a video each time.

I mean...why wouldn’t you just go buy a new one?

They check to make sure you’re fire extinguishers are still good, so there’s a good possibility they’d check your PFD.

Thankfully the rearming kits are cheap enough and you have YouTube. Now order the kit. Lol
