Wilson Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I have a 14 foot jon that I have decked and such. I now have a bow mount trolling motor to mount on it for this season and sold my 4.5 to get a 9.9 or 15 hp. What would I need to do to set up a steering console and throttle on the side?? Im looking at a 1985 honda 9.9 but theres other out that i know. Ill attach a few pics so you can get a visual. Ill also have seats and pedestols on the front deck and back deck as im extending the back deck right to the back. then seats like a bass boat for the steering. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 18, 2009 Super User Posted January 18, 2009 It will probably be in the way more than usefull in your setup. If anything, I would look at Stick Steering but that would probably have to be added to the rear seat now that you're elevated the front. That being said, I wouldn't see much need in spending that money since if you've gotta run it from the back seat, just as well use a tiller and install a seat slide so you can slide the seat to one side when you need to run the motor and centered when fishing. Either way, make sure you get a motor with electric start. Nothing like have to go back to start the motor and then back to the seat to run it. Quote
Wilson Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 thanks .... but ive made mind up lol I want one and it will work good in my boat ive measured and stuff. just need to find out what i need to make this possiable. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 18, 2009 Super User Posted January 18, 2009 I'm with W2S on this one. You'll already be sitting on the back seat if you put a console in. Then you've got a steering cable to think about along with getting the electronics for an electric start at the helm. Seems like a waste of space and money IMO. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted January 18, 2009 Super User Posted January 18, 2009 i dont see how its going to be done and funtion very well. the center of gravity in the boat will be way off. the boat wont plain and if by chance it does, youll be putting your safey at risk. id love to see pics when youre done. I agree. A jon boat usually have flatbottoms and if your off to one side than It would really be easy to flip it over while going down the lake. When I had my 14ft Lund I thought about doing the same thing, but decided against it. It would be a neat idea and I guarantee that you would have the only consoled jon boat around. If you still are going to do it, might try a center consol, that way the center of gravity of the boat is even when in the drivers seat. Quote
Calcutta Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 If you are going to do this The best idea Ive heard is to go center console. You could buy a sheet of aluminun and build the templates out of card board. A jig saw will make short work of cutting the alum. out. If you havent already, you should look at boaters world or west marine for a complete kit. There is one called the Safe-t quick steering system or the NFB 4.2 mechanical rotary kit. you dont have to fool with welding the console. rivets about every inch or 1/2 inch will be strong enough. Calcutta Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Oh I forgot to mention the throttle, I wouldnt use one,I would get a hot foot and a seperate ignition switch. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 19, 2009 Super User Posted January 19, 2009 Here is a link to a pic of my boat with what I believe you are talking about, I have not any problems with this set on a 14ft jon. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?action=downloadfile;file=boat1_004.jpg Quote
Wilson Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 did you install that yourself? and what did it run you? where did you get your parts. Ive been looking on boaterswolrd for a bit but not sure what exacually it is i need. Thanks Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 19, 2009 Super User Posted January 19, 2009 Sorry, it was installed by the prior owner, it came as a kit by the paperwork. I don't have them on me right now but when I get to them I will get the make/model and whatever information it provides. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 19, 2009 Super User Posted January 19, 2009 You haven't mentioned the shifting mechanism you are considering. You need that whether you use a hot foot or not. Quote
Wilson Posted January 20, 2009 Author Posted January 20, 2009 by shifting you mean like gears? i never thought of that. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 21, 2009 Super User Posted January 21, 2009 More like FOWARD, NEUTRAL and REVERSE. Quote
