LionHeart Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Hey guys, I'm always searching for the perfect light texas rig rod. By light, I mean 3/16-1/4 oz bullet weight, and plastics from a Baby Brush Hog, 6" Zoom Lizzards, to other misc. 6-8" ribbon tail worms or creatures. I'm currently using an ALX Zolo Deputy, and it is really sweet, but have been wanting to try a Megabass rod for years. Unfortunately there is nowhere within a few hours drive that I can handle any of the rods I'm interested in. Has anyone used any of the 'newerish' Orochis for light texas rigs? If so, which model? What do you think of it? I like a texas rig rod to have a fair amount of tip, (moderate fast action is preferred), just not a cranking rod. A good way to put it I guess is to compare what I'm looking for to the Falcon Bucco Trapcaster, but just a smidge stouter. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would appreciate anything you'd be willing to offer. Thanks-James Quote
Chris186 Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 I used to use the first gen Orochi XX Diablo Spec-R for this exact purpose and it was an amazing rod for me. Perfect tip and plenty of backbone. I used to have 3 Megabass rods, but I have since switched over to try other things and honestly I still think it was the best rod I have used for that purpose. I just bought an Alpha Angler Zilla, we will see how it works out. But I would not hesitate to try Megabass if you are thinking about it. Quote
Dens228 Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 I use the Braillist for that purpose. Weightless up to 1/2 oz. Quote

I was kinda thinking about the SpecR vs Braillist. 26 minutes ago, Dens228 said: I use the Braillist for that purpose. Weightless up to 1/2 oz. Thanks. The SpecR and Braillist are rated 3/8 at the bottom end. So you would say the Braillist handles lures on the low end of its rating better than the upper end? Quote

To be honest I've never handled the SpecR. I will say that I've had no issues whatsoever with a weightless plastic on the Brailist though. Would it be the best? Probably not. I don't use a lot of weightless plastics, if I did I would probably use either a Flatside Special, which I currently have for cranks, or a Swingfire due to the action. But like I said, for my purposes the Braillist serves me well. Quote

If this is what you like, the Diablo Spec-R is probably right up your ally. Would be great for what you described, among many other things - It's probably the most versatile rod I've ever used. Could go down to the Flatside Special if you like to use lighter line and fish more open water with it. Could also go up to the Perfect Pitch if heavier line and cover. The Perfect Pitch handles lighter weights surprisingly well, I frequently pitch 1/4oz weigh with Z-Craw Jr on mine and it does great. Sounds like the DSR is really the rod for you though. Only disclaimer I'll put in here is that all my experience so far is the with the Gen1 XX. Quote
Bandersnatch Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 What type of cover are you fishing? I'm in with the brailist. The spec r is really nice but extremely light and feels overpowered if fishing around grass. My buddy tried to fish a weightless five & and six inch senko around grass and was way under powered. This was also not around big fish. Quote
LionHeart Posted March 22, 2020 Author Posted March 22, 2020 That's a good question. I always struggle deciding when it's time to pick up a more powerful rod for the cover I'm fishing. As a result I usually just keep on chucking with whatever is in my hand. The places I fish have a bit of everything though, more timber than grass. Most of the grass is against the bank, so I typically need to pull the fish away from it instead of through it. I guess I'm looking for a good balance between a soft enough tip to cast light lures but enough muscle in case I need it. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted March 22, 2020 Super User Posted March 22, 2020 If you want a modfast rod the new XX ETMF might be worth looking at if you are using lighter wire hooks. 1 Quote

The Dupty is a all around use rod not specific for jigs &.worms. Your choice of 1/4 oz T-rigs falls into the 4 to 5 power MH fast 1/4-1 oz lure range of the typical "bass" jig and worm rods. Hartwood71 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Agree. EMTF I like for cranking, but for my taste, def too mod for Texas rig. I prefer sensitive, faster tip. For open water Texas rigging, I hate to say this because of $, but hard to beat Loomis GLX’s 6’8” Med/Ex-fast. They can be found below msrp. Quote
clh121787 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I love 1st gen emtf for t rigs. Its the same rod as dsr but a few inches longer. Brailist is good too but but kind of dull in my hands. Own all 3 plus more in the 1st gen. Pretty much fish all dobyns now but that emtf is still one of my favorites. Quote

Tom Really nothing. Crazier still, it is a great rod for what I want. I honestly have no legitimate complaints about it. I usually will keep a rod for a season or 2, sell it, and try something different. Sometimes it works out, sometimes I truly regret getting rid of what I had. 1 Quote

bunz559 Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I wouldn't suggest the EMFT. I have one and love it for 3/8 chatterbaits, medium diving cranks, lipless, and on occasion weightless Senkos. Although I've never used the Diablo for anything other than Keitechs and chatterbaits, I would imagine it would work just fine for the application you're looking for. It has a softer/slower tip but has a nice strong backbone. Would be great for casting light t rigs. It's no noodle. Compared to the Braillist, it's slightly less powerful and has a slightly slower tip. I throw 1/2 ounce jigs on my Brailist and wouldn't mind throwing t rigs as well. I think it comes down to what kind of water you're fishing. Out here in Cali, I fish mostly open deep (20-60ft) reservoirs. Quote
