Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 So For about 5 days now I have had severe pain right where the top of my right Leg goes into the hip. It doesn’t hurt when I’m sitting or when I’ve taken a few steps. But it’s worse when I first stand up and take a few steps. I don’t remember anything that would have caused it recently. Never hurt there before the slightest bit. It hasn’t got any better, maybe a little worse. I really don’t want to go to the doc if I can help it. Any ideas? Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Depending on your age, it may be nothing, But, if your getting up in years, you may want to go see a Doc.. I'm almost 72, and I also play golf, one thing I do is hip stretching exorcises that I got from a retired pro baseball catcher, it really has helped. Hope you get it sorted, pain is no fun. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 20, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 20, 2020 I’m 59 , with no chronic health issues except a little lower back pain every now and then. Strangely enough, my back hasn’t hurt at all since this started. Quote

I’ve had similar issues for many years with my hips. After being in one position for any length of time, it would always hurt for a few minutes when I’d get up. After moving around, I feel fine. My doctor told me it was just arthritis. He told me, more exercise would help. Sorry to say, I couldn’t tell you if his suggestion made any difference. 1 Quote

Super User Bird Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 I'm also 59 and had very similar symptoms. Simple hamstring stretches helped a bunch, do them every morning. Another herbal remedy which was surprisingly helpful was Turmeric and fish oil, try it. Hope the discomfort eases up for ya'. 1 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Hope you’re feeling some relief @N Florida Mike as I’m typing this. Any chance you carry a big, fat wallet filled with business cards amongst other things in your right rear pant pocket? If so, it’s possibly your sciatic nerve. A neighbor was dealing with the same kinda thing and that’s what his doctor asked. He showed me his wallet which was almost 2 1/2 inches thick from an inner jacket pocket. He stopped carrying his wallet in his pant pocket and declared the pain subsided after a day or two. A call to your doctor would definitely be in order so this doesn’t get in the way of fishin 2 Quote
Quarry Man Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Taking medical advice on a fishing forum will only get you so far... Best advice, call a doctor. with that being said, your description sounds like a sciatic nerve issue. This is caused by the piroformus muscle being tighter than usual which causes street on the sciatic nerve as it extends through your obturator foramen, aka the hip hole. The cure to this is typically stretching the muscle out with targeted stretches. Lie down on your back on the floor, bend the unaffected knee straight up, then rest the ankle of the affected leg on the unaffected knee, and slowly press your affected knee away from your torso. https://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/piriformis-exercises800.jpg this is a wild guess as to the issue, but ut shouldn't hurt to try. If it helps it should relieve the issues within a day or so. source: Doctorate of Physical Therapy Student 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Hope you feel better, soon. When I drive for hours and get out of the SUV my knees and hips are tight and painful. After walking around for about 30 to 45 seconds they loosen up and are fine. I take Aleve only when I go fishing to help with the knee and hip pain. Aleve drives the pain away. I know I have to have my left knee replaced in a few years, if not sooner, due to the arthritis build up. But I will do all possible to avoid the surgery for as long as possible. Agree with the guys for you to see a doctor to find out what is going on. Not a surgeon as they make their money cutting on you, but your family practice physician for their opinion and a treatment plan. Good luck. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Sorry you're a little busted up. As mentioned, if it persists you really should seek medical advice from your doctor. Most all of my 'soreness', is self induced. Hope you're feeling better sooner rather than later A-Jay 1 Quote
livin2fish Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Wife had pain running down her leg. Primary care doctor misdiagnosed (simple x-ray would have seen the problem). Sent her to physical therapy. Month later no improvement. PC doctor suggested she go to a pain clinic. Not wanting to be on pain medication the rest of her life, she went to a neurosurgeon who had attended her after a car accident. X-ray showed the problem to be a disc very much out of alignment, probably caused by a more recent auto accident. Spinal fusion surgery out of which she was pain free. Never took any pain meds after surgery, just a few Tylenol. Important to make wise decisions about your body. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Hmm... My son and his wife are doctors. When asked by me or my wife about ANY medical issue they both have a consistent diagnosis: You should probably see a doctor. 1 3 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 If you are sure that it is in the joint, then it is probably not life threatening, but it could make it hard in the future to do things like fish too if it gets much worse. It could be arthritis or something else but I would see a doctor if it sticks around a while (if it is arthritis, I highly suggest some diet modifications as in the long term you can control flare ups better than medicine!) In my case, my right hip is all sorts of messed up and has been since I was maybe 5. I can put my left leg behind my head but I can't put my right leg over my left knee without holding it there. They had no idea what's wrong with me back then and still don't seem to so I've kind of given up and just hope it doesn't get worse but I had a car that was technically to small for me and as soon as I got something bigger, the pain in my hip went away and has been much better ever since. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 20, 2020 Author Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Thanks everyone. I’ll try the stretching first. I took a muscle relaxer last night before bed. It didn’t help the pain but I sure slept good!! I took an Advil before work and it kept the pain at bay Almost all day. Seems better now even after driving 100+ miles today . Quote

Captain Phil Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 About 15 years ago, I began having pain in my legs and hips when standing. It wasn't a shooting pain, just a constant dull ache and heavy feeling in my legs. I was not able to fish standing, so I began to experiment with different boat chairs and pedestals. As it progressed, I went to an orthopedic surgeon to have it checked out. They gave me an MRI and discovered I have spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is arthritis of the spine which pinches the nerves in your back and legs. I researched my condition and concluded surgery was possibly worse than the problem. I have learned to live with my condition and have been OK so far. I take a small dose of gabapentin at night and it helps me sleep. During the day, I take Tylenol Arthritis. I learned a few things that may help you. Epidural steroid injections did not work for me. They do for some people. Keep your weight under control. Every extra pound makes it worse. Don't sit inactive for long periods of time. Moving around helps. Physical activity is good for you, just don't overdo it. Go to a good specialist and have this checked out. If they start talking about surgery before they try anything else, you have the wrong doctor. If they recommend anything that social security won't pay for, get out of there. You can't fix my problem with a 1/2 inch laser cut in the back. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 22, 2020 Super User Posted June 22, 2020 I'll tell you what the surgeon told me about my shoulder. If the pain is in one spot it could be anything from a muscle strain to arthritis. If the pain shoots or spreads out it could be anything from a pinched nerve to some kind of tear. Best to get it looked at by a good professional that you feel comfortable with. Quote

Glad to hear. I need new hips but a PT gal is helping prolong the inevitable. Seams I spend about the same amount stretching as I do walking. Getting old isn’t for ******* Quote
