mcs424 Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Hello. I am a pretty new bass fisherman and mostly fish small ponds. I know enough about lake fishing to know which lures to use when, but I am at a loss for pond fishing. Can you give me recommendations for baits to throw in ponds? Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 Depending on variegation, and cover, the same lures you would use on a lake, except for deep diving crank baits. Bass are no different in a pond compared to a lake or river. Soft plastics T rigged are always good, as are a number of others. Quote
Bass Ninja Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 If you're a new fisherman, its a smaller pond, or a new pond for that matter, IMO nothing beats throwing a texas rigged weightless senko. Since bass of all sizes love it, and almost every species of fish in the pond will swipe at it, its great to build confidence, catch a lot of fish, and figure out the kinds and size of fish in the pond. Just an all around good time. FYI, I have noticed that catches go way down if it isnt rigged right. when it slowly sinks through the water column, it needs to shimmy if that makes sense. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Tie a Trick Worm, weightless on your spinning rod and don't take it off. They like the bubble gum color a lot. Aside from that I use mostly the same baits everywhere. I also fish a lot of topwaters in ponds. Since they're usually shallow, bass will be in that zone where they're more likely to hit a surface bait. Most ponds have some weedy cover so the frog is a real killer. Add to that a spinnerbait and you have the basics. Quote

Seems like it shimmys more when rigged wacky, cause both ends of the worm can shimmy. When you texas rig it, it seems the hook end is pretty stiff and doesn't shimmy like the free end? Or am I wrong? Smells like fish Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Yep, same as above! A pink trick worm was it for me! As a kid growing into a teenager I was able to fish a great pond in a cattle pasture. I caught many many hundreds of bass if not thousands there and the majority was on bubble gum trick worms weightless on a zebco 33! Many years later the land owner filled the pond in and as I drive by on the highway that flat piece of ground speaks nothing of the memories it made for a kid on his own with a fishing pole 1 Quote
greentrout Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 can't go wrong with a t-rigged trick worm or weightless ... if you can use a baitcaster, tie on a z-man 1/4 oz. chatterbait ... or an 1/8 oz. with spinning ... a young man at our neighborhood pond educated me on the effectiveness of the chatterbait ... good fishing ... Oklahoma Mike Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Assuming it is open water... senko, paddletail swimbait, spinnerbait, jig. In that order. Quote
Westcoast Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 A senko (wacky or trig), a t-rigged fluke, a frog, a small spinnerbait, and a t-rigged baby brush hog. Those are my pond favourites and they work every for me. Quote
basser27 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 The same lures you use in lakes will work in a pond. Quote
Mr.C in Texas Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I spend a lot of time pond hopping. Every pond is a little different in approach and presentation. You need to know how to physically approach and move around a pond without spooking the fish with your footsteps and color of clothes do make a difference. Large or noisy presentations can spook and entire pond or activate feeding....just depends. I was out pounding ponds this morning and had a lot of success starting out with a subtle presentation (dark sleeper, Ned rig, Senko). Then I moved to frogging for topwater and chatterbait/spinnerbait for mid column presentations. Quote

Don't be afraid of going bigger than you'd think. We do quite well at small ponds throwing nice size wakes and glides. Yesterday my brother and a pal had an afternoon dinkfest at a 5 acre pond while throwing only wakes and glides. My brother went back at dark and bagged a tank on a MS Slammer, but as you can see in the pics even the dinks will eat bigger baits. Quote
