Super User J._Bricker Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 Very nice setup @Patrick Reif, I was just curious how you were going to enclose things to keep deer and other undesirable critters out. @Raul glad you’re good with SPAM. All cleared off the shelves here and it’s over $12 a can on Amazon which was kinda of unbelievable. @J Francho, I agree it’s surprising how the milk/dairy section gets cleaned out. But a lot of folks have little ones and don’t want to make a lot of unnecessary trips to the store. Besides, I remember my mother would freeze milk back in the day, then mix it with powdered milk as she tried to stretch a military paycheck and feed a large family by herself when pops was overseas. *eggs- great source of protein, can be served at all three meals in a variety of ways, come in their own packaging, stores well especially if boiled. We’ll get through this by being a family, community, and country. It’s how we do it that will define us. Be well everyone 1 Quote

As per the original topic on hand, I don't have enough land to really garden or farm, and what little land I do own gets virtually no sunlight. I have some canned goods, canned mackerel and sardines, tuna, beans etc. and a freezer full of meat. Beyond that when the stores run out of food and that's gone, I'm going to be eating cats... 2 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 19, 2020 Super User Posted March 19, 2020 I have a small garden (onions, green beans, carrots and tomatoes) it will be awhile before I get it going, temps still below freezing here at night. My in laws have the bigger garden and we share vegetables. We are ok for the time being, plenty of canned and dried non-perishable stuff. I joke with my wife that once I am out of peanut butter and oatmeal I am catching perch and bluegill to eat. After that it’s time to break out the BB gun and thin out the squirrel population here. Starting Monday i go to a work from home schedule for the next 2 weeks at least. 1 Quote

James Pondscum Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Had to make some hard choices this week. Do I fish for trout or walleye? Went with trout for more social distance? Did not fish today. Heavy rain and wind. Do I buy gas now or later? Priced at 1.59 at the truckstop on the eway. Guess I will have to tough it out and go fishing every day. Water must be warming up caught five bass Monday. Just trying to make the best of it. 4 Quote

I'd send them everywhere if I could. Just hope it holds (or perhaps even drops) for open water season summer. Would certainly help out once I start towing that wreck of a rig of mine up & down the interstate. A-Jay 1 Quote

One is filled with black raspberries for both jam and wine (makes a wonderful Port). 4 has veggies that can well, the last one has a few 'special' treats - wife loves cantaloupe, I love honeydew. Guns/Ammo? Lever-action 30-30, semi-auto 12 gauge, .22 rifle, .22 pistol and a GP-100 in .357 - all with a good amount of ammo. House use to have a well, was capped when city water was put in 40 years ago (before I moved in), but I've had it cleared and hooked to the outside water - I have a manual pump ready to go on it if needed. Water's been tested and it's potable. No room for 'animals'...and the city code prohibits them anyway. There are deer and even wild turkeys that wander about...so there is that. Plus I'm only two blocks from the lake...so fishing is always an option. The fireplace in the house is in the center - not an outside wall - and I have a few cords of wood stashed away and plenty of trees in the area as well. @MN Fisher in mentioning no room for animals, actually some of of grandparents and parents were able to get around that. Rabbit hutches weren’t for pets, hasenpfeffer was severed quite often starting around the depression.... Quote

Be well everyone We have a couple dogs that keep the deer at bay for the most part, but you're absolutely right. The potential is there. We generally don't have much problem but are planning a serious cage around the beds once they are all done and I have the greenhouse built. 1 Quote
Way north bass guy Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Gonna be a couple months before we’re planting outside here, but we’ve been harvesting about 6 different varieties of lettuce since December from our greenhouse, and now that the sun is getting stronger, we can’t eat it fast enough. I can pick a huge bowl full that would make about 6 big salads every day, and don’t even make a dent in our crop. As for work, I work by myself. Spent last week going by snowmobile across a big lake to spend every day in a summer cottage building a fireplace, and now it’s warm enough I’ve started my outside work, which right now consists of a bunch of small brick chimney rebuilds. I’m the only one on the properties, So I’m not catching anything or making anyone else sick, and I have enough work lined up to stay busy halfway through summer already. 7 1 Quote

I built it with some windows I got out of a reno, and some extra stone I had sitting at my shop. We start our winter lettuces around labour day, and just planted our tomato seeds about two days ago. By May when we’re ready to plant outside, the entire top shelf is covered in all sorts of maters, zucchini, cucumbers and herbs. It sure is nice in the dead of winter on a cold sunny day when it’s -30C to step in there and feel the heat, and smell the dirt. If you close your eyes, it almost feels like summer. 2 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted March 20, 2020 Super User Posted March 20, 2020 Given the warm weather I decided to go ahead and get my garden set up and ready to go. Gotta get some more garden soil delivered but other than that, I am ready to go. I follow square foot gardening principles so i got to use my inner analytical brain and organize the garden to maximize usage. The cucumbers, zucchinis and golden squash grow up a trellis over that section and the beets grow underneath. Worked out pretty well last year. I plan on also planting spinach and lettuce in two week cycles to fill in the areas to the right so I can harvest every couple of weeks without it all bolting or getting too large and tough. 1 Quote

The shelves will be full again. The thing to do is to buy what you need, and leave some for the next guy. We put them in a bucket and left it in the hotel room overnight thinking our moms would cook them for us the next day. Well, as you might imagine, they died and stunk up the whole room by morning 1 Quote
